Starting Problems....HELP

I'm having a problem starting my '95 GT 5SPD. When I have the car in neutral it just tries to start but will not turn over. If I put it into first gear then it starts. It will start in neutral most of the time but some times it won't. Has anyone had a problem like this? I think it might have to do with the clutch pedal. I just read that the car won't start if the clutch pedal is not all the way down. I just bought this car so I don't know if the clutch has been changed. Any help with this would be great. I do not what to be stranded and have to get a tow. Thanks, Greg

Greg, please clarify. WHen a motor wont turn over, it does nothing. To me, 'trying to start' requires having the motor try to turn over.

If it is totally dead when you try to start it, your clutch safety switch idea might be decent. The switch is on the back of the clutch pedal. On my Fox, it is adjustable and when it got older, it would lose its position. I would have to put the pedal through the floor to get it to crank. I would just readjust it.

Good luck.

Yea this is what it seems like. I do have to push the clutch down hard.
I did not know there was a switch behind the clutch pedal. That just might be the problem.
Thanks

If you feel like it, get under the dash and on the back side of the clutch pedal arm, you should see the switch (make sure you have the right switch - there might be more than one).

The switch has a ratcheting adjustment and I used to run mine up so I would not have to bury the pedal into the carpet so hard.

It self adjusts and if you get on it while driving and really bury the pedal, it readjusts. So then next time you need to start, you have to press the pedal as hard as you did during that last hardest clutching.

Good luck.
