I have just acquired a 97 mustang gt and do not know much about these cars. I wanted to know where the black wire that attaches to the spade post on the starter solenoid goes to? The car will not start if i try to start in the the car using the ignition. But if you leave the ignition on the run position and go underneath the car and jump the big red wire to the little spade the starter will engage. I just need to know where that wire goes. Is it going to the fuse box? Is it on a relay? anybody know?

There is an interlock that prevents the starter from working if the clutch pedel is not depressed (or automatic in park/neutral). The interlock breaks the flow of electricity to the starter solenoid preventing operation.
Is the car a Manual or automatic? Have you considered that the Park interlock (automatic) or the Clutch interlock (manual) is what is keeping the car from starting?
The anti-theft system can cause a no-start for the 1996-1998 model years.
Assuming that it is not something simple as the clutch pedel not depressed, diagnosis of the interlock should be done first.

Check anti-theft or TR sensor
Does this car have an anti-theft system? The diagrams indicate this can cause a NO START condition.
Check the transmission range sensor (TR) under the car. Look for R/LB and W/PK wires. Put a volt meter on the R/LB and measure voltage from there to ground. Attempt to start the car. If no voltage, the problem is in the IGN switch or anti-theft.
If voltage, the proplem is in the TR sensor. Confirm this by injecting 12 volts to the W/PK wire. If the starter turns, the location is confirmed. Note, be sure transmission in park/neutral, block the wheels, and set the parking brake.
My wiring diagrams indicate that connector C106 can be accessed via the engine bay.
My older reference manual will not allow me to copy/past diagrams.
