Well it was warmer today than it has been and I drove the Stang around a bit. Well, I noticed today when I would nail it I would hear some pinging again! Damn.

Well, it would ping a bit and the temp gauge would rise after (to be expected) but while cruising regularly it is fine.

Do our cars have a knock sensor? I have to check the timing again, but after changing the PIP shortly after buying the car, we set it at 10BTC and it was fine ever since. I run 89 octane in the car, and it is all stock. I know I can probably step up to 91 octane, but hey... that shouldn't be required.

Anything else to look for? What is the easiest way to check the timing curve on this thing? Does it have to be under load or will bringing the revs up and using a timing gun be sufficient?

Thanks!

Apparently my ex-husband made that mistake.

My old engine used to ping at mid throttle all the time. There is no knock sensor on this car. There are a few things you can check, but don't rule out the possibility you just got a crappy tank of gas. You might want to burn through the tank and see if it does it on a fresh tank.

I'll give that a whirl too. It was out of nowhere really, and the tank is almost gone so it wouldn't hurt to try a new tank and see if that helps.

It seems to run warmer now too so maybe that has something to do with it. If I rap the gas in neutral pretty hard I can get the temp gauge to creep up. Once again, it seems out of nowhere. The only thing I have done recently was change the PCV valve and oil, but that was a few weeks ago and it was fine after doing that. I'll fill up at a different station and see if that helps. The oil is clean too.

In case you can't tell I am a little OCD about certain things and I really don't like when things don't work properly lol.

The only related Item you mentioned is the PCV valve. If the hose popped off it would be a large vacuum leak that could cause a lean condition.

You might be on to something. I somehow doubt that my PCV lines are OEM. They look... well, they just don't look right to me.

Crap, time to make another thread about THAT lol.

Given that you just changed the PCV, you might be burning oil (sucked in through the fresh PCV) and it may be caking carbon on one of the valves causing the ping. If that's true, there's not a lot you can do to fix it without running richer or pulling timing.

Also, using a timing light, unhook the 'spout' connecter (little grey plug) near the driver side finder to check your timing. Doesn't need to rev, just idling, preferably smoothly.

Don't forget to clean the MAF sensor if you haven't already.
