i bought my 91 GT a little over a year ago and the starter was bad so i had it replaced. But it would always make a scratching skreeching type noise after it turned over for a second then went away and all was fine. Then in about 6 months the starter crapped out again and upon inspection the flyweel teeth were worn in some areas so i had a new ring gear pressed on to my flywheel replaced the starter again and still sometimes not all iam getting that same noise!can anyone shed some light on this? I really don't want to go through this procees of drooping the tranny and replacing everything once again!thnx.

Is there a backing plate there. Its in between the motor and trans. Also make sure the bolts are tight and not stripped out. If all the above is good than get a starter shim. They do have them for fords. Or you can take a washer or two and put them in between the the starter and the bellhousing of the tranny. Sounds ghetto but it does work if you cant find the shim.

I can see shimming a Chevy starter since it will bring the tooth contact closer and farther away from the flywheel teeth, but Ford starters it will keep the contact the same but make less contact with the teeth so I don't see how that would do much unless you didn't put in the engine plate between the engine and bellhousing but that's it. Just check all your bolts and make sure it's tight. My top starter bolt has come loose 349384028 times, I've tried loctite and using a longer bolt and putting a nut on the back. I just found out I have no bottom starter bolt when I went to start my car back up at the Mickey D's drive-thru since they can't hear me over my car and it went clickbuzzrerrrrrrrr so i pushed it to the side and retightened up the top bolt and driving it like that for now. I have to retighten it every once awhile. Anybody happen to know what size bolt the bottom starter hole takes? That would be greatly appreciated. Sean

I just started the car for the first time after sitting over night and half the day and it sounded fine, then went into Wendy's came out and got the noise again.i'll put it on the lift tommorow and check the bolts etc.I just don't want it to ruin the flywheel again!

Believe it or not but has they sell starter shims for fords. They serve the same purpose as for those other cars (cant say that bad C word) lol. I didnt believe it when I heard about it untill I saw it myself. The starter bolts do come loose alot. The bolt size is 3/8. They are standard size bolts.
