Roush steeda tri-ax? what's the difference?

can someone explain the difference in the saleen close ratio shifter and something like the steeda tri-ax? was thinking about upgrading but what are the pros and cons? my gear box is already very close and a short throw...so, i'm wondering what's the tri-ax all about?

Your 01 may be different then my 96. If it is not, you have the cheapest Hurst short throw/close ratio shifter made. I can't figure out for the life of my why Saleen went with those cheapo shifters. I went with the Pro 5.0 and I love it! The Hurst doesn't look much different then the stock shifter. It is mushy, mainly because it has rubber all the way around it where the shift handle attaches to the shifter itself. The other problem is that there are no stops on the shifter. Also, the pro 5.0 has a steel ring around it where the stop bolts attach. It is rock solid. No stops can become a problem if you are speedshifting the car. When you "grab" the gears, you are normally exerting quite a bit of force. Without the stops there, you run a better then average chance of over extending the shift forks and breaking them. They are made of magnesium so that they will "chew up" in your transmission gears if they break rather then ruin the tranny gears, which is a good thing. However, you will have to pull the transmission and replace the broken fork. Yes, you do have the “cheapo” Hurst. And yes, you will notice an improvement in shifting if you switch to a Pro 5.0 or Tri-Axe. I went with the 5.0 and the adjustable handle from MGW. I love the combo.
Saleen’s come with the Mustang stock shifter handle and rubber bushings, by the way. If you want to take a little slop out without spending much money, purchase a set of solid shifter bushings and install them between the handle and shifter.

does the pro 5.0 have the capability of a short throw on its own, or would i need to buy an adjuster as you mention? sounds like something i will invest in...

No problem! The Pro 5.0 comes w/ its own "short shifter". However, some people complain that it is to short. I'm 6'1" and have no problems. I have no idea what they are complaining about. I'm sure someone else can tell you about the Tri-Ax, but I personally have no experience with it. When I was researching shifters, I went with the Pro 5.0 because of their patented 2-3 offset shift mechanism. They weren't kidding! If I simply push up from 2nd, it will automatically go into third. It is a sweet shifter...

The throw of the Pro 5.0, Steeda, UPR, B&M, etc. is shorter than stock. The Hurst as well is a short throw but it is not as precise as some better made products. The Pro 5.0 includes a short handle in the box. Many people, including me, find it too short and cumbersome on late model Mustangs. I tried it but had difficulty reaching gears comfortably. The shifter boot was also very compressed which affected shifting. I think the stubby Pro 5.0 handle works better on Fox body Stangs, as it was originally designed.

A popular combination is the Pro 5.0 with a Steeda handle.

looked around today and looks like i may go with the steeda tri-ax for the simple fact that my cash flow is at a minimum right now because of the KB on the way. can someone tell me what transmission my car has... i'll place my order when i find out.

head paneer...been meaning to ask you, what in the world is your avatar? looked at it for weeks now and i have no idea what that is. looks like some sort of animal or something?

Maybe maybe not. Some of the later 2001 models had the new T3650. There is a tag on your door that will tell you a code that says whether or not its a t45 or t3650. Maybe someone will let you know or I know some places will tell you on the order form. Check Partshoppers website, they might tell you.

called steeda to order and had to jack the car up and look at the transmission to do so. apparently mine is a 3650 even though it was manufactured by ford in march of 2001. the drain plug is dead center at the rear of the unit with the plug facing the ground. that makes a difference i hear. atleast i got my order in to steeda before the hurricane dicks the shipping up.

well i woke up this afternoon to my little white box from steeda. the tri-ax is polished and looks bad azz. can't wait to put it in, funny though, because the car is parked with a bad series II. still haven't heard anything on my KB order...hearing rumors of a backorder months long and this or that. i think if i finally get ahold of someone at the shop and that's the case i'll go with a top of the line vortech or a paxton novi 2000. i wouldn't mind waiting a while for the KB but the saleen is my daily driver and i'm working on about a month right now that's its been down. :damnit: soon, i'll take my boost anyway i can get it and with the money i save on the system maybe buy forged internals, ported/polished head work, or easily get some headers on there and still get the full tune. either way, i'm still gonna be putting out about 400rwhp with the money i spend. i just love that instant boost and torque on the KB.

on a side note steeda sent me their entire product catalog with my tri-ax. i'm impressed, thing is a huge in color magazine with everything you could ever want to buy for a mustang. get the feeling i'll be making more purchases.

and head paneer, yeah, that's it...i've decided you need to look into some help on the doll thing. hahahaha
