Steel Cowl Hood

I just got back from the body shop and the owner told me to go ahead and buy all the parts I need. Then he will install, line-up, prep, and paint everything! I told him that I was going to get a fiberglass cowl hood, but he said I would be better off with a steel cowl hood...looks better after paint and is stronger. Who makes a steel cowl hood and where can I find them? Let me know what you think about steel cowls. Thanks.

I read in MMFF (last years issue with the burgundy notch) that the Goodmark piece weighs 2lbs less than the factory hood .. so there you go

Looks like the same thing for alot cheaper.

Edit: This is in fact a Goodmark hood with a 2.5 cowl.

They must buy them in bulk....or there's not much of a profit margin..

Right thats a huge price difference. I contacted Dugan and they told me it was a goodmark. The only thing is they said it was a 2.5" cowl and on goodmarks website it's a 2". I'm going to buy this hood.

those hoods are a great fit I had one on my 89 and it fit way better than my fiberglass hood

I would like to find some pictures of steel cowl hoods on a car before I buy one. The picture on Goodmarks page makes it hard to tell how high it is. Post pics if you have any. Thanks.

Sounds like you have a lazy body shop. 'glass will take longer to prep. Have you considered doing some of the prep yourself?

Ive never done any body work before...he will do the fiberglass but he just said the steel would look better. I want to go fiberglass because there are many more options out there and they weigh less. Can you use the stock hood latch with a fiberglass hood or do I have to use hood pins? How fragile are fiberglass hoods? Thanks.

You will have to check with specific hood manufacturers as to what stock gear they will accept. Some are for racing and only have pin mounting provisions, others use stock latches.

The steel will look better (with less work), if sufficient effort/time is put into 'glass it will look just as good. No reason why it wouldn't. It may cost you more to have the extra labor done on the 'glass hood though?

The blue car is all carbon fiber, and I don't think it looks too bad.
The Saleen S7 is also a full CFRP Body.

'glass is fairly easy to repair with more 'glass.
