Steering Colum Chatter

Ok, this is the last problem that I have with my stang. Yes I do have power steering. At speeds about 45, I apply the brake and my steering colum starts to chatter(excesive vibration). I think that the pitman or ideler arm may be a little loose. My belt for the power steering pump isnt loose or crooked. Any help would be appreciated.

same with me

even after a rack and pinion conversion, I still get quite a bit of shake through the steering wheel, mostly while shifting or on bumps. Might be a difficult one to nail down, as my setup has been totally gone over.

Any other '70 owners want to chime in? It could have something to do with the collapsible steering column design since both Dan and I have it?

A warped brake rotor will cause the car to shake when applying brakes and can be felt through the steering. If it only happens when braking then i would look at your brake system. Any vibrations from the brakes will travel through the tie rods and up through the steering system to the steering wheel.

When I suspected a warped rotor, I went to Harbor Freight Tools and got a cheap dial indicator and a magnetic base for it. It was under $30 total. Found that my new rotors were out of spec so a new set were shipped to me (which were also out of spec and had to be turned... but I got to keep the first set so if I need a new set I can get them turned and use them...)

Hey man, mind i ask what those Unique Performance coilover kit cost you? Is it cheaper than the TCP setup?

I think the main advantage is that they're actually available, I think TCP is still backed up a month or two on these? At least, this was the case in January. I wanted TCP, they were out of stock. I have heard that two month figure within the past week or two. I assume they're equal in quality.

that's the price I paid. I still haven't done final ride height adjustment because I need to get my wheels and tires in there first. They feel fine, but I almost feel like I could have gone with the stiffer-spring big block kit. I'll have a better idea when my Eagle ST 205/70 tires are replaced with wider, narrower-sidewall tires. Then I'll probably be glad for the softer spring.

I know heat is the culprate for warping the brake drums or rotors, but how does it build up excessive heat?? I repacked my wheel bearing like last year and greased them up real good. I also dont ride my brakes like most people(I coast to about 45 then gently apply my brakes).
