I disconnected my steering shaft/rag joint last weekend to do some adjustments to the steering, steering wheel and wiring in the steering column. After completing the work I went back to reattach the steering column to the steering box and found that the steering shaft was now about an inch and a half short from reaching the box. I tried pulling on it to get it to stretch back and it won't give.

Anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it??

68 up have a collapseable column .the shaft has a plastic bushing at the end .it must just be stuck, try taping it down it should slide.

If I remember correctly it should just slide right out with a little encouragement. Just be careful not to get too aggressive with it, cause IIRC it can slide completely out and then you will have to remove the whole column to put it back in. I do know that every year is slightly different too, so let us know how it works out.
