My steering column is so bad you have to pull down on the steering wheel before the car will start. How do I fix this?

Is the column loose? Have you checked the ignition switch?

More questions.....The WHOLE column moves or just the steering wheel/tilt part? Is it bolted down good under the dash.

Just the tilt part. Once you pull down its like the ignition makes connection and it will start.

Sounds like you need to replace the entire column...

It may be able to be rebuilt somehow, but it's easier just to get another one that's in better shape. The columns wear out over time, I had to replace one in my old ex-police Crown Vic. Matter of fact I think the one in my Mustang may be starting to go as well...

columns are only like 50 bucks at the junkyard, and aren't very hard to replace.
