Steering Gearbox Leaking

Can someone tell me if its worth rebuilding my gearbox or just buing a new one? a new one would run me about 300+ dose any one know what a rebuilt one would run me?

new flaming river boxes run between $430 and $500. rebuilt boxes run aorund $200. you can rebuild your box for less, depending on how much work you can do yourself. the adjustments of the box can be a royal pain though getting them right.

I had two boxes rebuilt at $165 each. Neither one of them worked properly. I ended up getting a Borgeson "remanufactured" gearbox and it works great. It cost $365 with shipping.

i can get a seal kit for 70 bucks for my year...its just that i dont want to mess something up thats so important, an engine prob isnt that bad, if the engine dies i can still muscle it around, but the steering, i dont want it to break and go into a semi...

I debated the same thing with my 68. I ended up getting a new flaming river box. Very happy with it.

I just took a closer look and realized that you have a 73. You can get a rebuilt box for around $200 or install new seals in your existing box. The only "special" tool needed is a pair of snap ring pliers. Worst part of the job is muscling the box in and out of the car. It would be a good idea to replace the rag joint while you have the gearbox out.
