Steering problems

Ok the thread isnt about my stang its about my 97 explorer (still a 5.0 though) Something is wrong with the steering... whenever i turn the wheel something is makin a popping noise... it sounds like when you twist and pop your back a bunch of times... any ideas?

my first thought would be balljoints... or possibly tie rods?

Well it does it when the car is stopped... so i dont think its the balljoints... and the tie rods are fine i checked them saturday when i changed my tires

You cant recreate the loads needed to check BJ's. I assume the truck came with sealed BJ's - are there wear indicators? The usual push and pull testing for BJ's isnt valid on sealed units.

Both BJ's or inner/outer tie rods were my first thought too.
