I've rebuilt my engine and I just put it all together with a brand new Ford Racing flexplate from Summit. (FMS-M-6375-A50) I'm running with the stock AOD with a shift kit. When I start the car now, the starter gear seems to get be staying stuck to the flexplate for a couple of seconds after the engine starts. I purchased a brand new starter and switched it, but same problem; so it's not the starter. Anyone have any ideas on how to remedy this problem?:SNSign:

What year and how is it wired. When an oldschool Ford pole shoe starter does thiis, it means the relay on the fenderwell is stuck in the operating position. Or the ignition switch adjustment is such that when you let go of the key, the spring does not push the switch from start to run like it should.

If it is a mini starter, like the FRPP unit, the same applies, but you could have the wires touching at the starter which keeps it energised.

Lastly, make sure you have the correct starter (starter nosepiece actually) for a stick or auto, the correct block positioning plate and bellhousing, and flexplate or flywheel.

Thanks rd. At first, I thought it was a mechanical problem, but you got me thinking about the wiring...and I remembered seeing a diagram for it somewhere on the net. I upgraded to the mini starter and added the add'l wire for it (from the starter to the relay). As it turns out, I hooked it up wrong on the relay--that's where the wires were touching and keeping the thing energised. I've posted that diagram here so that others may benefit from it too.

Thanks again.
