Also you can pull the distributor and use a drill with a long flathead screwdriver attachment and spin up the pump. Pull a valve cover off and do the above to check the pump. Had to do that so I didn't destroy my jeep's new motor after I blew up the old one.

To prime the pump on a SMBLK FORD you need a speical priming tool or you can use a 1/4" socket, long extention in your drill, tape the socket and extention together so you do not drop it or leave it on top of the shaft. Pull 1 valve cover as mentioned, look to make sure oil is coming to the top of the motor, if it does the pump is working. You'll feel the pump kick in, the drill will bog down and change sound. Make sure you turn it the right way so your pumping and not pushing oil....
I made my own priming tool out of an old dist shaft. I agree the tools are a cheap investment that are worth every penny. I have done the socket deal in the past, just make sure you tape the tools together... Counter Clockwise is correct. I use a 1/2" drill so it doesn't bog down as much as the 3/8", some small drills will not cut it when the pump kicks in...
