Stock 1986 5.0.. powertrain into 74-75 1/2 ton?

Hey guys,
I've had a 1986 5.0 t-tops car sitting around with a blown bearing cap... 131,000km on the car. I also have my 85 5.0 so i don't really have much use for this stock fuel injected set-up. Then i found a couple of nice trucks that turned out to be free and my i would like to drop the FI 5.0 into the truck. I have two questions..

Would you use the 86 bw t-5 or an auto?

And what would i have to switch over from the mustang to the truck? Basically everthing under the hood? or do i have to use the trucks power steering pump and such?

I'm kinda stumped..
 
If you could get a hold of the truck's accessories, that would make life the easiest. If there's enough clearance, using the Mustang stuff wouldn't hurt and would probably be fairly straightforward. You might need to find a way to adapt the power steering lines to the truck, if they're different. Some equipment shops could probably make you some hydraulic lines with the correct fittings, if you needed to go that route. From there, you'll need to swap all of the EEC related wiring over to the truck, and probably have an exhaust shop fab something up in the way of an exhaust, adding some O2 sensor bungs in the process, in order to be ready for the EFI. If you'd like, I could move this to Classic Tech, since those guys are honestly going to have the most experience in swapping an EFI setup into a car that never had it as an option, so they'll probably be able to offer more advice than myself.
 
Before I tell you which tranny I'd use let me ask you a question. Are you ever going to tow with this truck? Any kind of heavy usage requires an auto.

Huh? I don't get it. Several of my friends are in the construction business, they don't seem to have any problems towing 14,000lbs and more with their 6spd powerstrokes, and most people I know that tow would rather have a stick anyway. Granted a T5 isn't made for that kind of abuse but I don't get the logic here.

Because there isn't a clutch available that'll fit behind a 5.0 (truck or car) that will take towing abuse on a regular basis. The tow ratings for all manual F-150's ever since way back (before 1980) is substantially lower than the automatic ratings. Throw on a 4 wheel drive and you could probably pull more with a automatic Yugo.

A F-350 Powerstroke is not a 5.0 F-150. Not even close. The frames are different, the clutch is way different and the intended uses are different.

Just check the towing specs for yourself if you don't believe me. BTW, I tow a lot with an F-150 and I know a lot of other people who do too. I REGULARLY (as in every day) pull a 6,000 pound trailer behind a modified for towing 1995 5.0 F-150. This kind of abuse will kill a clutch quick. I've seen it happen a lot.
 
I agree with Maryland. If you want to tow often or tow anything heavy, find either a C-4 or small block C-6. If it's just a cruiser or toy, run the T-5. Be cautioned though that shifter placement may not be optimal.

I would run the trucks accesories and whatever you want for intake, exhaust, etc. Should be a cake walk if the truck already has a 302 in it...
