Stock Exhaust Question

ok, I'm doing an O/R pipe w/i the next week, but my friendly neighborhood shop let me in one something... it's not good to go from a 2.5" pipe to the 2.25" extention tubes to the tips... so, my question is this: what is that extension tube called that goes from the mufflers, to the tips?? I need some cheap 2.5" tubing for my setup... plus, then, I can get a 2.5" mufflers... thnx guys.

The pipes after the mufflers are called tailpipes. I don't think there's any special name for them other than that. I do know that some companies sell tailpipes separately from a whole cat-back exhaust. If I were you I'd just replace the stock h-pipe for now. Then get a catback exhaust when you can afford it. The stock catback is not that bad - it's the h-pipe that restricts the exhaust. The pipes in between the stock h-pipe and the mufflers are also 2.25" I believe, so just replacing the tailpipes wouldn't help all that much. Someone correct me if I'm wrong tho....

I've got the stock catback except for the 2 chamber mufflers. No problems at all with my 2.5" X pipe. Sound is great. Eventually, I'll upgrade to a Bassani catback, but not for a good while.

I've done lots of research on mid pipes and never came across anything about negative effects of a 2.5" mid pipes coupled with 2.25" catbacks.

Anyone else???

Chalk up one more for doing the h now, and a whole catback later. Don't waste money on just new tailpipes. I still have my stock catback with an o/r x, and I haven't had any problems. Later I'm also going with a Bassani catback.

The difference will be negligable. Getting rid of the 4-cats is what matters. I wouldn't worry about upgrading to the 2.5" tailpipes. Not worth it IMO. Worst case scenario, you might lose 1-3 ft-lbs of torque somewhere over torque curve.

If I wasn't so damn lazy, I would have cut out my stock mufflers, and replaced them w/ the magnaflows.

What I think you mean is the "flow tubes" which are the tubes between the H pipe and the mufflers. I ran mine for a while with FMS shorty headers, 2.5" bassani offroad X, and the stock flow tubes and tail pipes with flowmasters. I now have the same setup only with dynomax welded race magnum mufflers (called welded ultraflows now) and I did swap out my 2.25" flow tubes for a set of SS 2.5" ones from Laurel Mountain Mustang, they were around $40. I do still have the stock tail pipes, and eventually I'd like to swap them, but I don't think at this point they are hurting anything. :)

when i did my mid-pipe and cat-back i was going to go with the the x-first and then follow with the cat-back. Brad's didn't have any problem with that, actually they recommended the x first, cat-back later approach.

i don't see why it would hurt your system.

if you don't plan on upgrading your mufflers then the 2.5" flowtubes wouldn't fit into your 2.25" muflers. but you may have to get 2.5 to 2.25 reducer flowtube to connect your x to your stock cat-back.

i think that's the case anyone please correct me if i'm wrong.

Ok, Killer is right, you are talking about two different tubes. Between the mufflers and the midpipe sits the flowtubes, which are only about 12-18" long and should be replaced (they are too cheap to skip). The second tube is the tailpipe, right after the muffler. These curve up and over the rear axle and exit out the back. ANY muffler shop will make custom tailpipes for half what you were quoted here. Don't skimp; go to a muffler shop (hell, I'm on Bainbridge Island and could recommend a place if you want) and get 2.5" all the way down.

I'd get the 2.5" mufflers and flow tubes that way down the road you can put on 2.5" tail pipes and have a complete 2.5" "cat back" Don't get 2.25" ones because they will be of no use to you down the road. The idea of the muffler shop should only be concidered if they have the ability to mandrel bend the piping, if not its a waste of money as your 2.5" quickly becomes 2.25" or less at every bend. Mandrel bent tubes (which all aftermarket cat backs and such are) maintain a true 2.5" even on bends and turns. Very and I mean VERY few muffler shops have the ability to mandrel bend tubes.

most times exhaust shops just want to talk you into buying stuff from them. last year i was taking my moms v6 dakota to get inspected and the guy was trying to sell me 3" exhaust for it saying how much power it would add
