Stock Hood Guys...Have You Ever Done This?

I know Joe has, talking with him last week.

I wanna know if anyone has ever "punched out" or "drilled out" the nostril holes on the sides of the hoods under the black plastic "vents".

I wanted to do this to perhaps vent out some of the heat. Joe said he can feel the hot air come out.

For those who have done it:

1. Do you think it helps?
2. Any problems with water getting in?
3. How did you cut/punch it out?

Joe can chime in to tell how he did his...for those who are interested.

Right now the holes are tiny circles. I just hogged them out to large squares. You can't go too big. Just follow the lines of the hood. Heat does vent out of there especially at idle. Water may get in but will just hit the ground. The hole is in between the strut tower and headers.

My car came with those allready cut out it also came with the black inserts near the rear wheels cut out as well. I have had no problems with water getting in. I'm pretty sure it helps cool the engine compartment down some.

The 96-98 Cobra hoods are functional but they dump in the rear of the hood and are really constricted. I was gonna take a dremel to mine and open the the outlet holes a bit to allow some better air circulation in there. If water does get in it would help cool the headers I would think.

Mine also came with those holes cut out, I thought it was something that came from the factory. The hole's are perfectly uniform, it looks like machine work. I just assumed the side scoops were "hogged" out to cool the brakes?

The holes are cut out from the factory, but RC is talking about enlarging them. I knew a guy with a 96 cobra hood that did it, he claimed it helped vent out some hot air. I don't think it'd hurt, but I don'tknow how much it will help either.

when i get nitrous on my car im gonna have 2 purges setup so it comes out the vents on my hood its gonna be so sweet!!!

LOL it'll look like dragon nostrils on the front of your car. Have to show a video of that when you get it done.

Speaking of purging, there is kit in the last JEGs I read where the purge is high lighted by a bright blue LED. That would look pimp with blue jets; intimidation factor alone is worth it.

Thanks Paul..I didnt think the question left any doubt to what I was referring to.

The cut outs...UNDER the black ON THE HOOD..not the side "scoops"

Mine already has cut outs? they are not very big, but they are stock. I thought about it but figure the big mat/heat shield would hold more heat in than what the hole would be worth.

Does that clothy thing on the inside of the hood hold in heat?
Maybe I need to ditch that as well!

The clothy thing is just so if the engine catches fire it will fall on it and help exstinguish it. Prob a good insulator I would think so I don't use it.

i think everbody has kicked around this idea at least once in their cars life.. to echo 95yellowgtbeast i was goin to do the purge idea, jus need a ****load of hoseline,a T-fitting an 2 nozzles. exact measurements i'm not sure of.

If you take off that cloth thing I think the amount of heat produced onto your hood will off-color the paint.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I have stobes in my 96 Cobra Scoops. I had planned to run a purge out them as well, but I have better things to spend my money on then something that will make me want to waste my valuable juice.

i removed the grilles in my hood and was going to make them feed cold air to the intake, but i never figured out a good way to do it, so i painted them silver and put them back in ...

Might be good ram air project but not cold air like you would get from the fenderwell I'm sure. Especially the induction having to go around a heat source such as the top of the engine bay (warm air rises) and the intake maifold can get pretty hot. Who knows, could be better than my "cold" air which isn't so cold prolly due to the headers.
