Drove my buddy's 25,000$ 67 Camaro SS around town this weekend after helping him work on it, and his car is 4spd but it shifts soooo much better than my 97 GT.

In his car, you could shift gears freely. In mine, it seems like you've got to wait a second before it will let you into the gear. The 1-2 shift in his car is EASY, mine is like you pull it out of first and go for second, and it holds you out of it for an instant before it lets you in. The problem remains with EVERY gear you try to get into.

Will an aftermarket shifter remedy this problem and let me go directly into the gear, or will my shifting capabilities always suck?

its not the shifter. Sounds like a shift fork or your clutch isnt engaging fully.

Exactly what I was thinking. While a shifter will make your driving experience completely different,I don't think it will help a hesitation going into gear unless that hesitation is the huge throw in between gears.

read his sig first and the tranny isnt the problem on the 3650, its the shift fork(clutch assembly, I think).

Of course I never had that problem.
