I have a T5 with about 112,000 miles on it and I was wondering how detrimental to it's longevity is powershifting?

Anyone have any experience with it? Any pointers?

I powershift my car every time it goes down the track. Personally, I think the T5 is way under-rated when it comes to durability and strength. However, if this is your daily driver I wouldent suggest it just to be precautionary. My trans has 95,000 on it and its been powershifted numerous times. Knock on wood its holding strong.

A lot of people dog the T-5, but it can actually take a pretty good beating before giving way.

Someone will be pissed thier T-5 is in pieces and they were powershifting a supercharged car, launched on DR's every weekend. It's like, "What did you think would happen?"

Powershifting is obviously not the best thing for your tranny, but if you do it only every so often, you should be fine.

Stock T-5's are junk. They do not hold up to beating at all. When I got my first mustang I beat the snot out of that tranny and it didnt last a year. I power shifted the snot out of it. However, one of the best things you can do for a T5 is to get an aftermarket shifter. This way you arent jamming the shift forks when ya are banging out the powershifts. Currently, the T5 in my second 95 has 134K miles and it is starting to go south on me. While slowing down and downshifting into 2nd (like you would be doing when turning) it immediately kicks it back out once the clutch pedal is released. Time for a rebuild.

I got my car with 72k miles on it. I started to powershift it at around 80k when I got the KC clutch. The car made about 30 passes, half of them powershifted, about 20 passes on a 100 shot and DR's. Third gear started to give warning signs until finally at 107k miles, the T5 broke.

The rest of your post was good. The T5, next to the Toploader, is Ford's BEST manual transmission. I've had my car for 5 years (bought it when I was 15) and learned to powershift with it. You cannot imagine how many times I've missed second and third gear. I can say that I have an easy 250+ powershifts on it and an easy 50+ 5500-6000 RPM missed gears (trying to powershift). The trans just started to make a little bit of noise last summer before I broke it, but that's to be expected.

Clutch type/material also plays a factor in how fast your transmission gets busted up.

To anyone considering - If you're going to powershift, you'd better be quick about it. I've too many times seen people powershift at the track but take so long doing it that you can hear the motor revving up while they have the clutch pushed in. And, I've actually seen 2 or 3 people who couldn't shift and blew the tranmission after several runs at the track because they couldn't pull the gears fast enough.

I think you pretty much explained why it is "junk" to you...you explained in the above quote - it was your fault.

I agree...I think it is underrated...people wonder why a "stock" tranny is ripping out with their strokers/blown combos

I wouldn't powershift on a daily driver or unless you have some extra funds/time...just as stated, a precautionary.

I do mine occasionally and for good reason it was babied when it was young and now well it get some hell treatment every once and a while. Only reason mine misses gears is from when i first got the car and it was my first 5-speed. now i dont miss a gear unless im doing something stupid.
