Strange Issue

I am not a guru with the mustang yet - so I will try to best explain this issue I encountered last night.

While I was driving last night - I noticed a louder sound coming from underneath where the shifter was located. You know how there is that moving drive train sound underneath the shifter all the time? Well - this was the same sound but enhanced drastically enough so that I noticed.

I pullled the boot and dust boot off and I could hear it really well. It looks like it was coming from the spinng rod (drive train?) underneath the shifter.

After a little while of encountering this, I turned the car off/on with no luck... This sound happens even if I was rolling forward while I wasnt in gear.

I popped the car in reverce... backed up a bit... and put it back into drive.... the sound is now gone.

Anyone have an idea what the hell this could of been? Its an 2006 GT manual with 20k miles.

The spinning rod would be the driveshaft. If you believe your driveshaft is making noises, get your car to the dealership immediately and have it checked out. Without a driveshaft loop (which I'm assuming you don't have, because they aren't equipped stock), it's extremely dangerous if your driveshaft breaks. Serious injury or death could occur. Just take it in and tell them what you heard and have them check out your driveshaft. It shouldn't ever make noise.

OK - I definetly will bring it in.

I was driving in 3rd gear and I stayed in that gear at a pretty high RPM for a decent amount of time (I had my music loud and was on my bluetooth headset and didnt realize it)

After that - I believe is when this occured... But it wasnt like I was in the red area on my RPM guage..

Regardless - I would think that shouldnt cause an issue...

Also - thanks for everyones help... I know I am a newbie and all the input/advice I REALLY appreciate.

So far I havent had this issue again...

I did schedule to drop my car off Thursday. I have been smelling an "egg" smell whenever I hit the gas hard. May as well have that checked out as well!

Manual trans cars make all sorts of noises, especially when they're not all that well insulated like Mustangs. If you're not having any vibrations I don't think it's a serious problem however if you have the time to lay the car up and you know the dealer will actually look into then go for it. I get the egg smell too when I beat my car, it's the catalytics heating up. You can always bring me the car in Commack on Friday if the dealer doesn't get anywhere.

He said the vibration was coming from his driveshaft. Driveshaft vibration is VERY serious. It means it's either off balance or something linking to the DS is failing. Either way, it's very important to have it look at, or cold prove to be very detrimental.

It was a vibration... but it was more a sound. It was like the driveshaft sound was enhanced by like x10.

What I didnt understand was the sound continued even if I rolled while I was not in gear.

I bought the car used with 19k miles from Ford... I hope I didnt pick up a problem

Wow I must be tired, I must've missed where the vibration was mentioned I still don't see it going through the post again...If you do have vibrations then hell yea take it to dealer A.S.A.P.!!!

That definitely sounds like a DS issue. It could be an axle issue and causing the sound to travel up through the DS. Either way, it needs to be addressed. Even if you're not in gear, if the rear tires are rolling, your axles and driveshaft are moving. Thus, when you put it in gear and turn the car off, the car will not move. The transmission doesn't allow the driveshaft to turn, therefore the axles can't turn.

He didn't specifically say vibration, but all noises are vibrations of some type. And any noise/vibration coming for the driveshaft is abnormal and should be looked at ASAP.

Well - before I "solved" the issue by ingadging the transmission into reverse - I was on a hill and rolled backward.

The sound was not there when I went backward not being in gear. If I went forward while I was not in gear - the sound was there.

Why would the sound only occur going forward but not backward? Like I said though - once I engadged reverse the sound was gone all together.
