Strange noise coming from the back wheel.

I was riding around with my windows down and I notice this noise coming from the passenger side. Im pretty sure its the back tire. The only way I can describe it is the noise that you get when someone rubs their finger around the rim of a crystal glass. And sometimes I can hear something squeaking when im between buildings with my windows down. Bad wheel bearings?

there are no wheel bearings in the rear.

what is the condition of your rear brakes?

Pretty much new


I could have sworn that someone said to change the bearings while I was doing wheel spacers. O well. But as I said, the brakes have about 3/4 pad left.

no wheel bearings just axle bearings that are sometimes refered to as wheel bearings

what kind of brakes do you have on some of the cheaper pads do make the sound your refering too.what i did to eliminate the noise was to remove the pads and return them to the autoparts store and pay the difference for an upgrade. where did you buy the pads?

They were on the car when I got it a few months ago and my friend I got it from worked at Advance Auto Parts so Im gonna say Advance.

when my carrier bearing was going bad, it sounded more like a grinding than that sort of eery whistling glass sound you are describing ...

Mine makes the squeaky noise too and I determined that it's the brake's anti-rattle brake clips - they are loose. Next time you here it, and no ones behind you, lightly press on the brakes - you will notice it stops squeaking. The only place that I know of to get new clips is the dealership and they don't sale them separately. You have to buy the entire pad and they want crazy $s for those pads. So right now I just deal with it.

As far as the rubbing noise, check your tire pressure or make sure it's not rubbing on something.

get the car on jackstands, get in there and inspect the brake system. It's your likely culprit.

But it could be the axle bearing as well...you will know when you turn the wheel with everything apart.

I agree with brake system being a likely culprit. I had a noise similar to yours coming from my rear right, turned out my caliper had frozen up and was eating the poop out of my brakes. We were able to disassemble the caliper with some moderate beating, greased it up, and it works fine again.

As far as the anti rattle brake bad clips. I got mine from Napa. You do not have to get them through the dealer. Napa sells them for around eight dollars per wheel.

It stops when I tap the breaks, So I guess I need to get some more of those clips.
