This is actually on my '93 4 banger, but is there some sort of screen or something in the filler neck to keep people from stealing gas or something? The reason I ask is that for some reason it takes me forever to put gas in my car. If I just stick the nozzle in there and lock the trigger to fill it up like I do on my GT it will spit gas back out of the filler neck and out of the little overflow deal at the back bumper. I have to stand there and barely hold the trigger on the gas nozzle to put gas in the car. I have to pump a bit let it drain down then pump some more. I realize this isn't a huge issue, but it gets quite annoying. I was just thinking that if maybe there was some kinda screen in the filler neck then maybe at sometime in the cars life some kid shoved some leaves or some other foreign object in there.

not sure on that. on some cars there is a check valve in there that can get messed up (sticks above its perch).
not sure of any real ideas for ya though.

good luck.

I always have the weirdest damn problems LOL. Luckily the 4 banger gets great mileage so even when I get frustrated and stop pumping at a like 6 bucks I can still cruise a long time.

one of my family member's cars has the same issue so i know what you mean. fortunately the 4 bangers sip fuel so it is not too big a pain. i would live with it till you need to drop the tank for something else (unless someone in here has a magical cure).

Did this just start happening recently? Maybe your evap system is blocked or not working and theres pressure building up in the gas tank. Do you hear a hissing when you pop off the gas cap? I dont know anything about the 4 cyls...so this is just a general answer but something to think about. If I'm way off sorry I coulden't help....

I actually thought of that to, but no hissing sound when I pop the cap. I also scanned it for codes and nothing showed up for the purge solenoid. I am like you though I don't know much about the 4 banger.

he would only hear that if i was standing next to him when he removed the gas cap; we have never met

seriously, i dont know but let me run with your thoughts. even if there was a vent issue with the tank, when he is filling, the filler neck is open and it is not air tight around the gas nozzle, so i dont think that would be an issue for filling up (even if the tank vent was plugged). sound right?

My '93 5.0 does this.

If you let the pump finish, it will leave me about 1 gallon shy of full and splatter gas outside of the filler inlet. It is a PITA when you are at a gas station without a splash shield on the pump nozel.

So yeah, anyone with ideas for 2.3s and/or 5.0s, post away.

Critic, i think the problem big J is having is that anytime he tries to fill it up, he has to go real slow or else fuel will overflow out the filler neck. your problem sounds (to me) like it only happens when you are almost full..?? many cars do that
