street racing ... why do people do it?

Because groups of dumb arses like that give it a bad name. A cruise with a large turnout is one thing but those things are just stupid. I am kinda on the fense as to if I even feel sorry for the spectators...why the hell would you even remotely think that is a safe thing to do?

IMHO if your looking to race on the streets it is best to break away from the group/leave and go to a location that is away from a crowd, plenty straight, plenty wide (read not some 2 lane strip with one guy facing oncoming traffic), or a hwy punch again away from traffic (not in rush hour).

To me street racing is not standing around a bunch of dumb arses...that is rice and to me rice is ignorance, stupidity, and lack of respect. Sure generally at the "street" sceen's I have been part of there is a group of car guys BS'ing some racing kinda near buy but most just "heading out" with a few cars in tow (I hate it when a circus ends up in tow, when your trying to not be obvious to the po-po's what your doing). Then the cars come back and stories are told, but large crowds just hanging by the street with cars blasting down a few feet away from you...dumb.

same thing happened in Birmingham Al, but only two died. one was hit by a car and the driver of the car that hit the guy got scared and shot the guy that was trying to help the one that got hit.

its all pretty stupid. track only costs 10 bucks here

^^^ I wish the track was 13 dollars, it costs over 30 bux to race at the local track here...

Our local 1/4 track is $15-20 and 2 runs or so in 4hrs on avg. Its a good track just few days of good weather and when it is nice...gridlock...or tons or breakage and bikes running lap after lap. The only 1/4 track in a 2-3hr drive range. Several 1/8 tracks within 1-2hrs though.

WTF?!??! Why would someone bring their young daughter to a street racing event?? are you f****** serious... the police should charge her with child endangerment.

I cant say that Ive never seen street racing, or even taken part. Difference is, we went out on a dead end blacktop road 10 miles out of town in Iowa where no one drives it unless it is harvest season and its a combine... Why stand in the middle of an open stretch of hwy in the dark, knowing a car could come along at any time... And I agree that that chick should get in trouble for making it a FAMILY event with her 13 year old daughter.

i heard about that on the news. i thought it was pretty sad all along but i initially thought it was like an evening race and thats why there were people watching. then i saw the time of the accident and i thought who the hell gathers at 3am to watch street racing when its only 25 degrees out? that part makes no sense to me. I also dont understand the part about the crown vic with no headlights on? rediculous.

something similar just happened around here, street racers racing, and car lost control and hit a group of people. i didn't hear any numbers, but a casualty is a tragedy, no matter how many are involved.

i feel bad for the people involved that were hurt, but what they were watching they had to of known is illegal and dangerous.

i've never street raced, i'm young yet. but i know its not smart to race around a crowded area.

i'll be taking it to englishtown soon as they open up again for the year. and once i get a little more comfortable i'll take it to other tracks like atco, and island raceway and such.

30 bucks is alot less then when you get a ticket for racing, speeding, reckless driving, and your insurance going up.

There was an incident in ocala fl where 5 teens were speeding on a private runway in the dads $$$BMW$$$ Flew off the runway and hit a tree 10-15ft off the ground(200ft from the end of the runway. The car disenagrated all dead. The funny thing was An hour or so before it happened the kid was on a bmw forum wanting to know how to make the car faster. Stupidity kills!

People street race around me because the closest track, Epping NH, is 2+ hours away. I admit to attending lots of these, I've never been the driver, but the scene petered out when a kid in an eclipse was killed when he lost control and hit a tree.

My buddy Jeff street raced for money. Thousands of dollars would change hands in the Industrial park we used to race at. Among other cars he had an 80's Cutlass Supreme with a wacked out 454 in it. Most people wouldn't know the difference though, he'd claim it was a 307 and 90 percent of the time people would buy it, and if anyone called him on it, he'd admit that it was a chevy 350. We'd trailer it to a parking lot about 1/2 a mile from the "event" and he'd drive it in, and pretend it was a daily driver he put some "old" slicks on, which were really new slicks that had the side walls marked up. The car was completely un-streetable but he kept the inspection sticker current. He was cut-throat!

It was a legit 10 second car that had to weigh near 4000 pounds. Total sleeper, and he more then paid for the car with his winnings.

As others have said, the reasons for street racing are many.

When there are no available 1/4th mile tracks available nearby is a huge reason. When there is no legal way to do something, the illegal ways become more popular.

Also, even if you are willing to drive many hours to race on a crowded track and pay $30-35 for it, that doesn't mean the other guy challenging you is.

its kinda like "illegal" wheeling with quads or dirtbikes. when theres absolutely no track or legal riding areas within 70 miles, we tend to find other places to get our riding fix. If there was a legal alternative we'd jump on it in a heartbeat. im sure its the same situation for street racers.

i can't believe how stupid some people are. who in their right mind makes illegal street racing at 3 in the morning a family event. at 61 yrs old, he still didn't have any brains.

That Crown Vic looks like an undercover cop car and if thats the case then why were the cops crashing into spectators with thier lights off?
