looking to see if the 331 with the 185 AFR is a strong combo.. How much hp & tq would that combo give me at the wheels.. Is anyone running this combo? Are 331 powerful down low ?

yeah, but it really depends on the cam that you will use. A stroker will give you more torque because of the extended stroke

You won't need to worry about low end w/ a stroker I'd personally get a cam from Ed Curtis (I did actually!) It's only a few $$$ more than those Anderson cams.

Personally if it is properly built you will make 500RWHP and be on the verge of breaking the block in half......

Rick this is professionaly built with a sportsman block w/ a girlde an all forged internals... I dont think i have to worry about splitting the block in half.. 500rwhp, not bad for a street car

i was hoping for 550 + personally.. What else do I need to do to get those numbers ?????

Combo so far:

TFS track heat intake
185 AFR heads
v2-sq stock pulley , anderson power pipe
b31 cam , 1.6rr , upgraded springs for valve float
BBk long tube headers , dr. gas 3'' x pipe ( off road ) , mac 2 1/2 cat back
kurban FR , 42lb injectors , 255 pump , vortech inline pump , bigger fuel rails
electric fan , fluidyne radiator , 180 stat
a/c delete , smog pump delete
aluminum driveshaft, aluminum flywheel , centerforce dual friction clutch , 373 gears
blah blah blah list goes on...

what else do i need to do to get to the 550+ mark ?

I split a 351w (393 stroker)block down the middle with 600rwhp. Some guys last with 500, and some don't, it's a game of chance. You should honestly make 450+ to the ground with a good combo. The sportsman blocks aren't really much stronger than the factory production pieces. I've got a svo block now and it's a little beefier, but not much. Also, a girdle is only really going to keep the pieces together when it does split. A girdle wouldn't have helped my motor, it ripped the mains out all the way to the cam bearings. Girdle isn't going to help that much.

OUCH !!! im sorry man.. was it N/A?

are you talking about my motor being N/A or with the power adder.. cuz i know theres no chance in hell i can make that much power from my combo without the power adder.. This is also a daily driver so i dont romp on it 24-7... Thats the main reason on why i bought a 331, for its long life ( supposably)

JR's cars was a YS-Trimmed 393-396

I've been told the same thing that JR stated, although stronger the Sportsman blocks can still snap in half. Detonation is a killer......

I also dumped the pipe dream of a stock block or Sportsman block 351W and upgraded to a Ford Racing block.

Boost does not cause detonation, too much boost with a bad tune does. Just make sure your tune is good. What tuner are you going to run, your going to need one. I woulkd suggest getting the Renegade Pulley set-up with the brace that goes from the crank pulley to the blower to keep the stress off the front main, worth the money. www.rhodescustomauto.com e-mail Spence they make a modified version that is very nice, better then the Vortech design, tell him I sent you.
