95 escort/auto+air. compression-170,150,155,170.--computer shows no codes--spark plugs looked identicle and good(a little dry)--motor has 140,000 on it--cured all vacuum leaks--new plug wires and plugs--gutted the cat(merely precautionary)--symptom, it gradually lost power over the last 1500 miles , now not running smooth enough for road use.///// Dumb question zone.... do you roll the motor up toward the driver's side to do a timiing belt?-- to remove the timing cover, do I disassemble the belt tensioner or remove the accesory bracket it's mounted on. Fuel pressure or supply has not been verified yet.--it sounds like a vw for a few weeks now. Any suggestions?

compressions ok, but have you done a pressurized leakdown test?
No codes-Yeah the only OBD-1 fords that show codes are the ones that run right.
You don't need to move the engine for the timing belt. Remove the timing cover(can't remember the details I'll try to look tonight) and set the engine TDC. Get down and look through the cam gear and the Arrow in the gear should point exactly at a dot in the cylinder head.

Before anything mechanical check the fuel system.

the low compresson in the center cyls is a little strange. I would do a leakdown test like 351 suggested but its possible that you could have a headgasket leak between those two cyl. But i would replace that as a last resort. You could have an injector or 2 that is failing or a weaking fuel pump.
