Hey guys,

I'm still learning about the Mustangs, as I have only had mine for a month now. My friend has an '03 GT, and I can usually rely on him for accurate info. However, we recently got in an argument over how many cams our 4.6L 2V engine has. I believe it is a SOHC, as told to me by a local shop and the person I purchased the GT from. However, my friend swears that they are a DOHC engine. I'm thinking he might be getting confused about the 4V engines, aren't those DOHC?? Please help clarify this for me, as I am very confused now. Thanks!!

ok you have a sohc V8, which has one cam for each bank or cylinders so two cams total. the cobra/mach one is a dohc which has 2 cams for each bank of cylinders, thus 4 cams total.

What he said. The GTs have one cam over each head (hence SOHC). Each cam controls the intake and exhaust valves for that head. This is why the GT is a 2v. 2 valves per cylinder (one intake, one exhaust valve, per cylinder)

The Cobras have 2 cams PER head. So it has 4 cams total. On EACH side there is one intake cam and one exhaust cam (i believe, they might be alternating, but i think they are independent like this). This is why the Cobras are 4 valves. They have 2 intake and 2 exhaust valves PER cylinder.

DOHC > SOHC
