I am going to start saving up for a HCI build maybe next summer and I wanted to know what kind of combo I could be expecting if I wanted 300-350 rwhp. I might supercharge the car later on, so keep that in mind, but that wouldnt be for a while. I was looking at the TFS topend kits and they're pretty nice although I think I might be able to get slightly more power... The AFR 185 heads seem to put down really good numbers as well. Can anyone recommend a combo or share some dyno numbers?

On a 302, 165's with a matched cam and intake will give you a solid 300 horse car.

look in to the tri state heads. They are edelbrock knock offs and they make good power and you can have a set ship to your house complet for $850.Then i would put a TFS1 cam in it and a good intake. With that combo should make 300hp easy. I just don't like the fact that Afr's are $1,300. You can buy the tri state head and RR and still have money left over.IMO

I have pretty much the TFS kit but I pieced mine together. Twisted wedgies and a tfs stage 1 cam but with the track heat upper and lower. Never dynoed but ran like a bat outa hell. I'd say around 300rwhp give or take. You can squeeze a few more with a good tune.

Twisted wedge heads, holley manifold, 75mm tb, 30lb injectors, 1 5/8 or 1 3/4" longtubes, custom cam with power to 6,500 rpm and matching valve springs. Should easily do 340+ to the wheels depending on the cam. Forget the slow dime a dozen 300rwhp stuff, go faster than that.

PS: been there/done that years ago

Thanks for all the input guys! I figured the TFS kit would get you around 300rwhp, but I was wondering what kinda combos would make more power like grn92 suggested. If i'm going to do this, I might as well go big with the setup because im only going to do it once. As long as the combo is streetable im open to ideas!

Oh, and how much power are the AFR 165s good to? I was thinking 185s because if I supercharge later on they will give me room to grow.

DO NOT expect 340rwhp with full accessories.

AFR 185's would work well if you got aftermarket pistons, but if not the TW's or AFR's 165's. Either of those heads will flow enough for 300-350rwhp.

Let your cam grinder know what you want and what you are willing to give up to get it.

Grn had a tfs combo. 304rwhp. Seems like another dime a dozen 300rwhp car, like his stroker engine which is another basic 347. If you want the dime a dozen power, talk to him!

If it was me, I'd go with AFR 185's (aftermarket pistons of course), Holley Systemax, 1 5/8 Longtubes, 65 or 70mm TB (Accufab or Holley for most flow). Custom cam ground to what you want.

Get a 75mm TB if you plan on boost later like you said, otherwise that size is not needed for an N/A engine like a h/c/i 302. Many suggest that because they do not know where the boundry is to make power and how much air there engine can use/needs.

Good Luck, sounds like a fun project!

Raceoholic330 has afr 165's, a b31 cam, and a systemax intake on his stock 302 bottem end under 14 pounds of boost with 530 horsepower.

It can be done, not hard at all

I wouldn't call my stroker dime a dozen as compared to the typical 330-350hp stuff we see daily. Mine will out power those. But thanks for jumping on my dick as you usually do with out offering anything useful. We can call your over priced 300hp set up dime a dozen.

Mine is a dime a dozen It does what I told Ed to do with it

I see most typical 347's running in the mid (or a bit above) 350rwhp, the 347 that is. Yours is above that a bit I believe. If you would like to continue you can PM me or email me with no problem

The same can be said with many running TFS top ends with turbo setups and 9-10 lbs of boost. But then again, I think the topic was n/a horsepower.

Yeah they both can make some good power with forced induction later...

TFS has a bit more meat to port as well!

hmmm, i guess i wont be going with 185s then if I have to get new pistons. The valves dont clear stockers? See... my logic is that if im going to do new pistons... might as well do con-rods, and might as well do forged crank, and then i might as well stroke it, then i might as well get a new block... next thing you know i've got 20g's into a 350rwhp dart stroker... hahaha

I plan on removing the AC, installing 3g, and an e-fan before i do this swap so all the accessories wont still be there, although most will. These are some interesting suggestions though, thanks guys. Is anyone running edelbrock stuff? Ive seen some good numbers with that too...

Please.....I was born at night..but not last night. I have seen that kit dynoed with absolute ideal tuning and closest I've seen to 300 was 298.5...now you're telling me you subbed the Stage one cam with a weaker and 20yr old F cam and made 50 more HP than everyone else....please man your tuners playin with you to pump you're ego and his wallet. Love to see the dyno sheet on that pull...I hope you asked him for a second pull to eliminate the possiblity of a software spike error.

Trying to get 350 rwhp out of a 306 is difficult but it can be done. I've seen some combos on this board that have achieved it. That being said, the majority of people who have 306's, seem to be making anywhere from 280 to 310 hp.

I was able to make 307 rwhp and 278 rwt with my 306. It's bored .030 over and uses Keith Black Hyperutectic domed pistons and an Elgin Pro Stock solid lifter cam (it'll rev to 6,800 and makes peak power on the dyno at 6,400 rpms). Up top, I have AFR 185's, an Edelbrock F-28 dual quad intake manifold, and two Edelbrock 500 cfm carbs. The exhaust consists of Mac 1-3/4" longtube headers and 2.5" exhaust system. Due to the lack of torque, I run 4.30 gears and the engine cruises on the highway at 3K @ 80 mph. I routinely run 12.50's at the track at 108-109 mph.

I realize that mine is a carbureted example and may not suit your needs but I figured that you may want to see a carb'd setup. For the fuel injectioned models, the TFS setups seem to be very strong and if I had a later model, that's the setup that I would use.
