I currently have the a stock 5.0 50oz balancer with the motor I am building,

since the rotating assembly is getting rebalanced (changed flywheel, clutch, rod bolts) I thought it would be wise to change the balancer?

I need a 50 oz balancer for an early 3 bolt crank pulley setup. Typically this would be the same balancer you'd put on a 5.0 except it requires a spacer.

The only company I can find is CAT, which I've heard mixed feelings about and some have said their stuff is junk

I don't want to spend $400 on a balancer, even something used will work but eBay has nothing.

If I use a stock 4 bolt balancer it will require me to get a special pulley from March which is $100, so if I can get a balancer for under $200 I can eliminate the need for a new pulley and at the same time have a better balancer.

Any ideas?

why not balance the rotating assembly at 28oz imbalance instead of 50. It is easier on the engine.

I would buy nothing from CAT, even though I had a CAT 4340 forged steel rotating assembly, went 25,000 miles in a daily driven hard driving 347 stroker. when it was refreshed crank needed turned down 10/10 and rods needed resized. I just don't like cheap chinese stuff now.

Better yet get it 0oz internally balanced.

what is involved in changing the balance? do they have to cut away large portions of the crank?

My flywheel is 50oz but i can remove the weight. I can get a 28oz or 0 balance damper fairly easy for a 3 bolt pulley.

This assembly has already been balanced before to 50oz, the crank was drilled in few spots and mallory was added in a few places as well, I just don't want a crank that looks like swiss cheese and could possibly weaken the crank as well

If you're like me, the lighter balancing is cost restrictive. I'm looking at this Pioneer balancer from Summit. http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?Ntt=PIO-872030&searchinresults=false&Ntk=KeywordSearch&DDS=1&N=115&target=egnsearch.asp&x=10&y=8
It's SFI-approved, so I'm thinking it should be good quality. Hopefully we'll get some advice on it.

That is a nice unit. Even their non-SFI unit (3021 IIRC) does well for us milder folks.

Engine Might have to get a Dart block but don't want to and if I do, then 363 instead of 331. Thoughts on what I've already bought so far.......
