suggestions on killing some rust on the firewall

alright people heres the jist of it, i was checkin out this 72 fastback (its a solid car otherwise) and i noticed that theres a good amount of rust on the firewall. the metal is still pretty strong, meaning i cant poke a hole in it when i push on it, but i was wondering what i need to do, considering that ive never attempted body work before. for starters i thought id go get a block with 80 grade sandpaper, and then hit it up with that. afterwords i thought about spraying it with rust converter to get whatever was left and then using the spray cans of primer considering i have no painting gear.

id appreciate it if you had any other suggestions or tips or even precautions for me considering its my first attempt at anything of this sort. thanks guys

I would use a small sandblaster (cost about $100) with my air compressor, to remove the rust, but you may not have that option. You can also get some "Rust Encapsulator" from Eastwood Company http://www.eastwoodco.com which is an excellant product.

you can also try just a wire brush on a drill to get the rust off and then spray the rustoluem primer or paint,, considering the metal is still good after the brush,,

Navel jelly. Brush it on, spray it off. Just keep it away from exposed skin and wiring.

Is the navel jelly imbedded in the navel lint?

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I've also used naval jelly on small rust removal projects and it worked great.

Gawd I hope not. If it were, you'd no longer have a need for the ole anal cavity.

you know what ive been told by other friends that navl jelly works wonders. they said thats what the truck drivers use on their rigs to remove rust from the chrome and body. i prolly try that stuff.

also i dont have to remove anything to get at the firewall right, i.e. the engine, power steering, master cylinder, etc...?

No. I'm not sure how good it will work on grease covered stuff, so if you have any on there, might want to degrease the area first. Course, if it had grease on there, it probably wouldn't have rusted in the first place.
