Super or Turbo Chargers? What do you all prefer????

ok well i just ordered all the pipeing for my turbo kit for $650 and my turbo has a built in wastegate...so all i need now are injectors and to recal my MAF and a bypass valve. but after that i am pretty much done so it will be well under 2grand
 
some people get lucky when buying there stuff, some dont. I like turbos a whole lot. NOTHING scares a "street racer" more than hearing a V8's blow off valve. Thats like hearing the angels sing. I just like the set up of a S/C. I can put a procharger on in about 7 and a half hours. Dont know about turbos...never tried it. what really turned me away from the turbo was my friends turboed Focus. He bought the best of the best for his car but ended up blowing it up....twice. He blew it up ON THE WAY to the track. We rebuilt it in his garage. I leave to get something from my house bc we were done except a couple things. he plugs the wire to the wastegate in the WRONG port. Needless to say, there was no control of boost. it his 22 lbs of boost when he went to gun it 3 days after we rebuilt it. just seeing what my friend is going through shies me away
 
I ordered my Turbo Nov 10th and it arrived Jan 29th. I put it on blocks to install and being a newbie to turbos, I thought by end of March I would be rolling down the road. I found out that the software I am going to use to tune would not support the FMU so I had to order a new maf and new injectors. Hopefully, I will have the maf by the end of next week and running the week after. If you don't have much knowledge on turbos, don't order one. Go SC and be running by Monday. If this were my DD, I would have been up s*** creek. Lots of headaches, but hopefully worth the results.

You really have to think about the purpose and your strategies. Me, I would want a blower to tear up the streets with and have monster torque throughout the rpm band (1000-5000 for me) and easy to install. That's why I favor the KB blowers over anything out there.

If I wanted an involved project, cool sound effects and insane torque after 2500 rpm, I would go turbo.

I'm not sure where the centri blowers stand in my book, but they aren't out of the question. I think their best quality is that you can always find them used, so they end up being the most practicle out of the bunch being cheap used and easier to install than a turbo. You can do a JY turbo kit for dirt cheap, but it will be ugly and a pain in the ass.

In the end, my choice will be KB 1500.
 
reasons turbos make more power

alot of people say more power from less boost

here is how,

a properly matched turbo will spool quickly and make near full boost much sooner than a centrifugul Supercarger where boost increases with RPM all the way to redline, until the head unit is maxed out. It makes its boost sooner and then the power band often flattens out making a broad HP curve kind of like a nitrous dyno would. and of course a flat HP curve means it will have hella torque. Torque and hp are just derivetives of eachother from an equation.

another reason. a supercharger uses HP to spin it. this means for the given fly wheel that the motor is making it is being absorbed by the SC just like your water pump and alternator do. But it uses much much more.

another reason is turbine/ housing size.
people say I made XXX on ONLY 8 pounds and you only made xxx on 12 pounds. well it's apples to oranges when comparing 2 different turbos or a turbo to a supercharger

8 pounds form a t66 is not the same as 8 pounds from a t44. The amount of air going into the motor per pound has to do with the size turbo and or blower.
So NEVER compare 8 pounds form an s trim to 8 pounds form an S trim, because that is one of the most assinine comparisons one could ever make. "But he made 500 on only 8 pounds, and the s trim made 400" apples to oranges. not only is the s trim loosing alot of power to run the belt which is its disadvantage, but it flows way less CFM from the head unit. the addition of aftermarket heads and intake will drop boost read as well. same amount of air going through, just the straw has been opened up so there is less resistance to the forced induction to create pressure or PSI of boost.

You want a super charger to perform as a turbo. well look to the Kennebelle 2.2 liter blowzilla. This setup can make its full boost sooner than a turbo. yes it still looses power from having a parasitic effect on the motor in order to run, but it makes boost sooner which equates to a nasty nasty hp torque curve.

Boost is boost, turbo or S/C'er.

Anyway.

What people in the S/C'er community fail to realize is FUEL. They never account for FUEL in the 10-12% of power loss thru the crank belt system.

That is where they make a mistake and blow **** up...aka HG's failures left and right.

I personally love turbos because I can fab up my own turbo kit in a few hours and be done with it... the last 2 were FREE(minus $200 for the I/C fabbing).

Total cost of my first fab was $1k, that was tubing, two(2) T3 turbos, oil lines, injectors and pump. (non intercooled)

I did 3 different setup ups out of one setup I did a year and half ago. Also very upgradable and with a turn of a knob I have gobs of power. No switching pulleys and other mumbo jumbo.

I just turn a little knob and GOOOOOO. At the track I make aprox 15psi, at home on the road, I dont go more than 6psi.

I am helping 1105 with his system via online, he is just about to set his TT setup soon, just wait and see that animal fly for ~$1k.

PS: not stang related but we just turbo'd a 95 Eclipse GS(n/a) from my used piping off the first setup and that thing is bout to RIP unsuspecting cars a new ( | ) .... total cost = $0. Gotta love scrap!

heres a thread from turbomustangs.com...it speaks for itself.

Eric (xlr8) and I went to the dyno today to do some tuning on his car. a brief run down of the setup is my old trick flow track heat intake, same box stock twisted wedge heads, stock cam (retarded 4°), stock block, and 331 cubic inches. the car also has a stock fuel system like mine with 42# injectors. it has a 190 intank and 255 inline. he made the turbo kit and it consists of t3/t4 hybrids - .82 A/R t3's with a T04e 50 trim compressor.
on pump gas and 8.5psi, it made 512rwhp and 626rwtq . we made several other pulls on various boost settings but with a decent bit of C16 mixed in for safety (overkill but still...). at 13psi, it made 601 RWHP and 702 RWTQ . what got me is the air fuel was STILL only 11.5:1 with the stock system and 42's. i figured for sure it would be going pretty lean at that point judging by past numbers on my car with the same stock tank, pickup, lines, and rails. anyways, just goes to show you, don't believe everything you hear about what folks say the stock stuff handles (i've tried to make that point with my car).
we had decided to call it quits at 550rwhp (due to the stock block) not knowing it would make this kind of power at such low boost levels so we went ahead for 600 and got it with only 13psi and did so with a TON of tq. got to love these simple setups...
