supercharging a 2002 auto gt?

Well i have an auto GT 2002, well i wanna get some power and ditch the warrenty? would a auto supercharger perform right, or shift right? and what else would i have to get inorder for it to run good, a programmer?gears?shift kit? please help me thanks alot

It can be done, and often is, but you wont notice the boost as much as you would with a 5 speed. If you do put a blower on it you will notice there is a lag in boost once the car shifts from 1st-2nd. You probably already know this, but with an auto, when you slam the gas, the car pulls hard through 1st, then shifts to 2nd for a split second, then hits drive. When it does that quick shift from 2nd to 3rd that is where your lag will be. You will have boost up until that shift, then the rpms drop twice, once when going into 2nd, twice when going into 3rd. It is really hard to maintain boost with that kind of rpm drop(s). Once its in drive though, it will start to pull hard again once it gets into the boost.
The only way you can slightly remedy this is to get a different torque converter. Getting a higher stall torque converter will allow you to hold 2nd a little longer, allowing you to get some boost out of 2nd.
Your other option is to get rid of od, and put a manual shift kit in. Your car wont be hw friendly with that option though. You will be in drive on the hw doing around 75 at close to 3500rpm if you have any gear change. This wont be good on your engine .
I was thinking of s/c my old 5.0. I got to talking with the shop and all and found out how bad autos CAN be with a s/c. Im saying can since some will probably do fine and the owners will be happy with what they have. Needless to say my old 5.0 is going to get a TKO 5 speed dropped into it in a couple of months .
This is just my opinion man, take it for what you want.

My car doesn't shift like you described "shifts to 2nd only for a split second
then hits drive" what year was your auto?

um, how so? the only difference is that the auto tranny soaks up a bit more power. not a significant amount by any means.

i don't have any lag except in 1st gear when boost starts at 3k rpm.

huh? my 2nd gear goes from about 45 to 90mph. that is a bit longer than a split second.

i'm really confused as to why you are saying this. i have full boost in 1st, 2nd, and for the part of 3rd that i'm in in the 1/4mi it's about the same as the other gears in relationship to the rpms.

because of the gear ratios, yes. since the amount of boost is dependent on rpms.

WTF? some boost out of 2nd? i'm getting 9+lbs out of an 8lb pulley in 2nd. that is more than "some". and i have the stock torque convertor. i can hold 2nd as long as i want without a torque convertor. it's all in where the shift points are programmed in the ECU.

totally unnessesary.

rd02gt... if you want a supercharger, get it. there isn't anything to worry about with an automatic except that the shift points be adjusted so that you don't bang the rev limiter. it's a common problem with our autos when you add power or gears, whether blown or n/a.

Well my pro charger is enroute to my local speed shop and if you take a look at my sig. you will notice gears and PI converter. With a good dyno tune and calibrated chip i dont see any problem. As a matter of fact i will let you know how my install and tune goes in a week or two.

A lot of guys have supercharged automatics. Its all in the chip.

Agreed. With the proper tune and accessories a supercharged auto car can be just as deadly as a manual tranny car. Have a ball with it.

Please let us know about that install. I didn't see an aftermarket intake on your sig; do you worry about blowing the plastic one or are you gonna stick with low boost for awhile?

i am curious to know where you learned this from? and if your car was doing that, it must of been a bad install/tune?

rd02gt, i have an 02 auto that is currently undergoing a power transplant (n20 to n20 and s/c). i am currently dealing with the best place in michigan. i have researched and have been in and driven many s/c late models, autos and manuals. and i have never been told this or came across this s/c auto problem.

The plastic intakes are fine. There are plenty of cars making 15+ psi using them with no problems.

Like I said, its my opinion, like it or lump it for all I care.
In my 5.0 which is a '90 hatch, when I hit the gas from a stop, it pulls like mad through first. When it shift to second it is literally no more than for 2 seconds. It then shifts into drive and continues to pull hard. If I manually shifted, it was even worse. I could take 1st to a higher rpm, but then when I shifted, it was in 2nd for a second or less, then it would hit drive. Im not just making up stuff lol . I was at the shop when a procharged auto stang came in, it was either a '96 or a '97. The car ran like ass to put it bluntly. Once it was finally tuned I think it musterd out a a hair over 300hp. Granted it was a '96 or '97, but thats still pitifull. The guy had full exhaust, a chip, ect... Car was sadly just a turd. I was in the car some when it was being driven. It feel flat on its face once it hit 2nd. Finally once it got in drive and boost was able to build it felt nice and strong.
I have nothing against autos or those that have them lol I just dont think its the best choise to s/c them without upgrading to a higher stall converter or getting rid of your od. 99+ cars might be different, I was simply referring to my '90, and now to the '96 or '97 as stated above.
If you have a good tuner around hey you might be able to get something out if and I hope you do. I by no means ment to offend anyone , best of luck with your choice and let us know how it goes.

thanks alot guys! What kind of supercharger would you recomend? and why? i wanna have some nice hp that wont kill me to bad.. thinking i wanna hurt a cobra if possible, and whats your out look on turbos?

A KB/Auto combination would be a great street combo in my opinion. I've had a procharger on my car and it puked so my opinion of them isn't too high although others have had great luck with them.

I've had three different size Vortech blowers on this car now (s, t, & jt trims) and they've all made great power, been dead reliable, and are easy to install. Can't go wrong with a vortech in my opinion.

SLACKER!! you are supposed to keep going up in size until you run out of blowers. you gave up after only 3.

it all depends on what blower you pick, your mods, and how much boost you run. 340rwhp to whatever your little heart desires.

Where did you get that information from. I thought autos and super chargers were marriages made in heavn.....I've driven a GTP and I didn't noticed any boost lag in it. Im sure the Lightnings don't have boost lag either.......Never heard of such...

if you go w/ a Kenne Bell s/c from T&J, u can get a safe tune that will put u past 400hp!! keep us updated w/ the install if u decide to go through w/ it!! im interested to know how it goes!!!!
