Suprises under the valve covers - 4v windsor heads?? (links to pics)

Well I used to think I had a 289 windsor engine...It has a 289 intake and the flowtech headers for a windsor fit nicely (if a bit low). I never really knew about the internals of the engine and tonight I pulled one of the valve covers and got quite a surprise. Upon opening them I see not only a set of roller rockers (perhaps this explains slight ticking I can hear at highway speeds in the engine bay), but also a stamping saying "4V" between the rear two valve sets on the passenger side head.

I thought only clevelands had the 2v/4v distinctions, not 289s/302s thats why this was surprising (on top of discovering roller rockers).
Does anyone have any idea what sort of head these are?

I dont think they're australian heads.. I got the car soon after it came out of Cali, before it was registered. No work was done her prior to me owning it to my knowledge, however that doesn't mean its impossible.

i think it is a 68 302-4v head. in 68 they had a 2v and a 4v head, the 4v is supposed to be one of the better early 302 heads. that's my best guess

I think they had smaller chambers. Ports and valves are the same. I'm not a stock head expert though. I put my trust in AFR.

They came on the 4bbl carb equipped engines. My '68 has them.

Looks like 302 heads like my 68 heads also. If I remember right, Cleveland heads had canted valves....

The 302 4 bbl head is simply a re-casting of the earlier 289 heads with new casting #'s. Same ports, valves and chambers as the older 289 heads.

They may be 58 cc, but look identical to the older 289 54 cc chambers.The 58 cc heads have a different shaped chamber. I would tend to think they are 54 cc due to the compression ratio of 10 to 1 ( or is 10.5 to 1? ) Over the 2 bbl's 9 to 1 ratio.

Not meaning to highjack this thread, but after seeing this went out and looked at markings on the heads off of my 65 A code.
one had this and in this order left to right:
289 F (with an incomplete circle around it) 6
6H19 ( this is under the 6)
The other
289 F (with an incomplete circle around it) 66
6H12 ( this is under the 66)

Can anyone tell me about these markings and why they are different?

Your heads were cast on two different days---- August 12 1966 and August 19 1966. Both are rail rocker heads, should have round holes thru the head where the pshrods pass thru.

D.Hearne, I will check for the round holes thru the head when I get home. This may be a dumb question, but I am still learning so bare with me. The A code is supposed to have 4V heads right? If so are these 4V? Since my car was produced in Oct of 65, then it is also safe to say these are not the original heads for my car.

As far as I can recall (I have spent more time with Fe's than small Blocks)
The only difference between the 2v and 4v was the induction (card and intake) The different head was the Hi Po -

Yes, I'd say that you probably have a rebuilt/remanufactured engine.

I had a set of the 68 302 4V heads. Ford had them listed as 53.5cc chambers, smaller than the 289 chambers.

While small chambers are nice to increase compression on later model cars with big chamber heads, they still don't flow very well and flow is the name of the game. You can get whatever ratio you want with pistons.

the 68 4v heads are supposedly the best stock early 302 head to port, small cahmabers and no thermactor bumps

Both the 2 bbl and 4 bbl 289's used the same heads. With the exception of the Hi-po's as 390fe posted. The heads you have are basically the same head later cast in 68 with new casting #'s as the "J" code 302 4 bbl head.

Behind the starter. Sometimes you can see them with a light while it's in the car, but yuo may have to remove the starter to see them.

true but in 68 the 2v 302 heads had larger chambers and the thermactor bump
