here are the numbers off my block. Engine is on an engine stand so was not hard to find after scraping gunk off. Is there an expert that can decode this for me? Thanks,

It was cast on August 19 of either 1966 or 76, the botom #'s should either read C5AE or D5AE. I would tend to think it's C5AE based on the casting date of the heads you posted

I will recheck it when I get home tonight and scrape away the rest of the gunk on the block. If it were D5AE it would be a 302 right and not a 289? Also where do you get this kind of info? Thanks for the help.

Study all the different parts# books, Ford Performance by Pat Ganahl, The Ford High Performance Parts Interchange by Goerge Reid, Ford's Official 5.0 Mustang book by Al Kirschenbaum ( put out by Ford Racing) And lots of hands on experience over the last 30 years, to weed out the mistakes in the aforementioned books. The only one of the above that I DO rely on 99% is the Ford 5.0 book above, the info in it came straight from Ford. The other two DO have mistakes in them, but overall much of the info in them is useful. There are other books too that I've read, but can't recall them off hand.

Hey, thanks for all the info. After looking at the block in better light it is C5AE. So I guess I have the stock block and 66 heads. Are there any difference in the 65 to 66 heads?

The later 66 heads had rail rockers instead of the slot-thru-the-head to guide the pushrods and keep the rocker tips on the valves. One book I have lists the 289 Hi-po as having that casting # on the block. If you can check, might be a nice surprise to have the block. They had thicker main caps than the others.

really, I varified the numbers today. Anyway to varify that it is in fact a hIPO block?

here is a picture of the casting marks, I will try and clean the block a bit more tomrrow afternoon and take a better picture.

Check the main caps. They're the same thickness from top to bottom, the non HP's are tapered from bottom to the top.

the mains on my block are tapered, so I guess no HP block for me. How can I tell where the engine was built?

You can tell where the parts were cast, but as for assembly, that's a little harder to determine. Most I've heard were assembled at the Cleveland plant. Most likey the block and heads were cast at the Dearborn Iron Foundry ( DIF cast into the block)
