Surging in first gear

As some of you know, I just bought a 2001 GT with 44,000 miles. Sometimes when I take off in first gear and give it gas the throttle surges until I put it in second. Any ideas what causes this?

Any check engine light? Changed the fuel filter lately? Could try cleaning the MAF if you have never done that.

No check engine light. I just bought teh car last week, so I havn't had a chance to check everything out yet. I was thinking to change the fuel filter anyway. I will do some research on MAF.
