Switching from 3.73's to 4.10's (worth it)

I've had 3.73's for over two years now. I've had a lot of people tell me to switch to 4.10's. I've also had alot of people tell me that the difference in performance wouldn't justify the cost  . I can install them myself so it will cost me $140 (gears only). If it's not worth it, I can spend the money somewhere else.

If youre staying n/a, then it would be worth the upgrade. If youre getting a supercharger in the future, you might want to stick with the 3.73's.

PS. If youre staying n/a and then decide to do the gear change, do it right. Go with 4.30's. :nice:

I agree with Dark Knight if you are going to a gear swap 4.10 would be a noticeable difference but if you really wanted your car to come alive and keep it closer to your powerband I would go with 4.30 then your car would be killer...

Thanks for the replies. 4.30's....damn now that is a gear. How about traction with these. I have 17x9's with 255's on them so I have pretty good contact patch. This car is hardly ever ran at the track it's a daily driver though. So 4.30's would not be too much?

If I remember correctly, 96-98 non-pi stangs shouldn't us 4.10's unless there cobras, I think someone last week said those year cars don't have a wide enough powerband for that gear ratio, you'll get to your powerband then quickly get off. 99+ is another story because of the pi heads, they allow the motor breath better at higher rpm. Correct me if am wrong. BTW, I wish I could change my own gears, I would switch to 4.10's in a heart beat b/c of what I've heard

Go with the 410 you will feel the differnce ! If it is a track car I would go with 430's . I have 373's and I'm switching to 410's or 430's . I allso have nitrous you can just go with a taller tire if you decide to go with a power adder .

Yes, they are worth it. I also did the swap from 3.73 to the 4.10.
Let me put it to you this way, I should have gone with the 4.10's
in the first place. The problem now is that I want 4.30's :)

If youre planning on staying n/a, anything less than 4.10 gears in a 99+ GT or pre99 GT with a headswap is a waste. JMHO.

If youre planning on racing frequently at the track, and possibly using sticky tires(slicks), then upgrading the rear end from a 28 spline setup to a 31 spline setup would be a good idea to do when switching gears. Afterall, you have to tear into the differential anyway to put in the gears. Not much more work to swap out the axles and differential for a 31 spline setup.

As for correction the speedo, if you have a five speed all you need is a speedcal. It can be purchased from www.brothersperformance.com cheaper than anyplace else Ive seen. If you have a automatic, you'll need either a chip or ECU flash.

Best places to shop for your rear end parts is either with Randy Stinchcomb at Liberty Ford in Maryland or www.stangstore.com

Good luck with your decision. I personally think you should go with 4.30's. Apparently, so does most of the other gusy who've posted. :nice:

holy cow guys
woulnd't you be screaming on the highway with 410 gearing?
i wonder how it is for fuel efficiency.

im switching to a 99 GT in spring time, so I want to know if i should go 373 or 410

can you just imagine some of the people running 4.30's or 4.56's?

just like what they said, if your going SC you might wanna think about 3.73, N/A 4.10's, thats whats been recommended around here :nice:
