2006 V6, Manual.
Since it is Ranger Month, I wanted to see how much I might be paying to get into a new one of those, and in the process of the dealership appraising my car they alerted me to a potentially expensive problem.
They told me that my 'sync' is going bad in my shifter. I'm not much of a hands on kind of guy, so maybe someone will be able to tell me what's exactly going on. What I gained from the conversation was that the teeth on the gears that put it in gear are worn down, and sometimes now it is nub on nub, preventing me from smoothly shifting some times. Most of the time I am just locked out of reverse when starting the car, but putting it in to first a few times seems to get things synced (haha, get it).
I don't want to call a shop and sound like an idiot on this one, so could anyone run me through this a little better, and maybe quote me on what I'm looking at price-wise. The dealership said about $1800, but dealerships are notoriously expensive and I won't be going to one of them.
