What do you mean by "no 2nd or 4th" grinding? Can't find the gear? I've built my fair share of t5s and I'm sure a lot of us can help you. Just need some more info. What shifter are you using btw? If not stock, did you use the same one on both trans?

using a hurst short throw that was originally in the car when i bought it. worked fine in the trans that was in the car which was a 4cyl t-5. the "rebuilt" trans i purchased was a non world class t-5 and was just supposed to get me through the summer until i bought a good trans this winter. i bought a steel bearing retainer from summit which says "not for use on world class t-5". 1st 3rd 5th all feel fine 2nd and fourth will not even engage as though its just barely touching the gearsets...grinding but not engaging. i removed the shifter and tried manually putting into both 2nd and 4th with the same results. the new transmission is a pro motion t-5 and does the EXACT same thing again using the steel bearing retainer. ive adjusted the clutch( ram power grip hd) according to rams dirrections. clutch feels good in the usable gears. is there some difference in the bearing retainer that would cause this? it seems to be the only common reused piece although new. pilot bearing has been of course changed to v-8 also. im at a complete loss.

Steel bearing retainers can't be used on world class t-5s? Thats news to me...I have one on mine. unless they meant a 4-banger t-5 (which is world class but mistakenly thought of as not wc)

There is a dfference however between the 4-banger bearing retainer and a 5.0 bearing retainer...they are different. You cannot use a 5.0 bearing retainer on a 4-banger t-5.

i am not using the 4cyl trans at all. i have 2 others one a non world class V8 the other is a pro motion t-5 based v8 transmission. summit states right in the catalog not for use with world class.. i dont know what the difference would be but both transmissions have EXACTLY the same characteristics with 2nd and 4th. i have horrible luck but is it so bad that i can get two completely different transmissions with the EXACT same issues? the bearing retainer is the only common piece between the two that is why i wondered if this could be my problem? i am ata complete loss and do not know where to go short of throwing the 4cyl trans back in which will make the 4th time i have had the trans out of this car in the last week. my patience is running very very low at this point.

Does it go into 2nd and 4th without the engine running? I just had an issue with a steel retainer a couple of months ago.. The shaft on the retainer was too long and not letting the clutch disengage the whole way.. When I took the trans out to figure out what was wrong the retainer was all beat up on the end, as was the clutch disc. I cut about 1/4 off the end of it and haven't had a problem since..the original problem was that the trans was real hard to get into gear when slowing down to a red light..

I had the same problem with a new transmission. Two things I had to do was adjust my clutch cable (where the clutch engagement was half way thru the pedal movement) and back the mechanical stop for the shifter (B&M) where there was about 1/8" clearance for 2 and 4th gear. I could actually get the tranmission into 4th gear but it would pop out. After doing the above it cleared up within 50 miles. I blamed it on the syncos.

after screwing with it for a while in the driveway , i got it to go into 4th gear and second only a few times. i had to run it in and out of the resat of the gears over and over and drop it in 4th and it held. same for second. no repeatable steps just gt lucky a few times. i have been doing alot of resaearch and found that people who have bought the steel retainer had issues with it being to long and not letting the clutch function properly because it hits the center of the clutch disc. wich would make sense because when putting the trans in 2nd or 4th the shifter may go back but the trans itself is moving foreward. could this be my whole problem a 35.00 pos? i had this on both transmissions and have identical issues with them both. anyone experienced this or heard of this happening?
