T-5 in but the car will not stay running.

Hey everyone,

I have gotten my T-5 in and went to start it today. So I put a little fuel in the carb and turned the key and it started. Nice right? Nope quite. The car, once it burned what I had put in the carb it stopped running. There is about a 1/4 tank, and I didn't do anything to the fuel system that I know of. Is there something anything that I could have messed up, any insights?? Also, the car is currently on jacks.

When's the lsat time it started? Do you have a fuel filter that you can see it working? SOmetimes mine takes about 10-15 sec of continuous cranking to get fuel back up to the carb once it has sat a while. Try cranking it then if it doesn't start, maybe clocked filter.

I started it about a month ago. This really stinks. I took the fuel filter off and blew through it to see if it was clogged. It was not. I tried cranking it for about 15 secs several times.

Could his fuel line be clogged somewhere or could the fuel have went bad in that short of a time ???

I think the fuel is fine. You eliminated the clog from filter, but what about the rest of the line from tank to filter. Some grud could have coincidently gone ito the line.

If you pump the throttle from the engine bay by hand, do you see any fuel pissing in from the bowls? Fill these up with fuel too to help maintain the start up a little longer

So I am going to be working all week so I won't get to the car for a few nights. I figure I will do the following.

1) inspect length of line running course of the car

2) Fill up the tank witha few more gallons

3) If I cannot get the car started at that point, hook the gas can up to the carb to verify the t-5 is in working condition

I was also thinking that maybe while putting in the t-5 i hit the fuel pump and disconnected the line. I will check this out as well

You'd think though that you would have smelled gas.... Here's a crazy thought. Just by putting two and two together.... is it POSSIBLE you got fuel line pinched somewhere with the tranny or jackstand? I know it's remote... but that's how these things go...

Pull the line at the carb and see if it is pumping fuel. If not, work your way back. Fuel pumps can fail at any time, even times where it doesn't make sense.

I tried that yesterday and didn't have any fuel coming through spilling out. I think I am going to have look to this more.

Quick question. I am going to try and get this problem diagnosed in the next day or so. To see if my fuel pump is working should I unplug the fuel line from the carb and just turn it over to see if fuel is coming out?

One more thing. I know that I have to plug the vacuum line that went to the trans, but could the car not running wthout priming the carb also be a result of vacuum?

At least with my stang the vacuum line being unpluged only made the engine run a little rough.

Yes. It would be a good idea to get something to catch the fuel in if it comes out of the line. I had it spraying all over my engine because of my lack of forthought.

Yes, when you pull the fuel line from the carb, put a piece of rubber fuel line over it and run it into a bucket or jar in a safe location. You don't want any underhood spark igniting the fuel.

The vacuum fitting should make little or no difference.

Update

UPDATE:

So last week I had disconnected the fuel line going from the fuel pump to the carb and turned the car over to see if fuel was coming out. Not happening, so I figure it is my fuel pump.

Today I replace my fuel pump, hook up the lines, prime the carb and get the car going for a few seconds and it stalled out. So at this point I disconnect the fuel line going to the tank and connect the fuel pump to a gas can. Prime the carb and off it goes. Runs continously for 10 minutes. Disconnect the gas can and hook the gas tank line back to the fuel pump. Within a few minutes the car stalls out from lack of fuel again.

At this point I am confused.

I check the tank gauge again and it reads a 1/4 tank. I disconnect the line immediately at the tank and gas rushes out. At the point I connect a small pump to the line going to the tank towards the front of the car and I cannot get it to pull gas down the line.

MY CONCLUSION: I believe my fuel line in between the fuel pump and tank has developed a small leak somewhere. Though I do not see any fuel leaking, I believe that the line may have a small pinhole and it is pulling air through the line rather than fuel.

Let me know what you all think. Where could I get a new fuel line. I was thinking CJ Pony Parts. How do they ship it? Won't it get bent out of shape??

You could have easily bent/pinched the fuel line when you put the tranny in.
The line is routed in the trans tunnel with the brake line so maybe you hit it by accident when installing your T5.

I replaced my entire fuel line with a 3/8” Russell under $35 at summit. They are aluminum and easy to bend up. My C code came factory with a 5/16” and that wasn’t going to cut it.
It comes coiled up so it won’t get bent up in shipping.

Did you have to flair your line when you bought it from Summit? What length did you get?

Nope, I didn’t flare it. I just used rubber lines to connect it to the fuel tank and up to the fuel pump. If you choose to use stainless hoses and fittings you will need to flair it though. You will need a 90-degree fitting to hook up the line from the fender to the fuel pump unless you can make a nice 90 bend.

I think they come in a 20' or 25' length.
You can also choose the color of the line.

Thanks for the help Pbum5 How come you would need to flair it to use the stainless steel hose?

Additionally, what is this 90-degree fitting? Do you have a part #?
