hello all,
i suppose i could have posted this in talk, but i've had a bad day and i think this qualifies for tech anyway, as a warning......
some may remeber back in june i'd bought a t-5 off e bay, turned out to be a 4 cylinder one, guy stalled me past being able to take action with pay pal or e-bay, so, i got ripped. my fault for trusting i guess, plus the guy didnt have alot of feedback.....lesson learned right????
well two weeks ago i see these rebuilt t-5's on evil bay, guy had great feedback, communicated well with me, etc. this transaction was out side of e bay although i did use paypal to pay for it. ok, so i was supposed to be getting a very quality re built transmission, he supposedly knows what he's doing, builds racing transmissins, etc, and like i said he had great feedback...
so, today, tranny comes. looks like it's from a junk yard, greasy, oily, etc. i think oh no........then i start looking at the input shaft, i realize, well, its not a 4 cyl shaft but it looks funny, so i measure it. it measures at .680 thousandths......8cyl shat snout should be .668.....
well the shaft was spray painted black....so i think ok, i'll wipe off the spray paint and measure it again......still the same.....i'm like wtf.....so i get too looking, the damn shaft has been welded up, or sleeved to resemble an 8cyl shaft!!!!!! i also put the trans in first and for one turn of out put, the input turned almost 4 times ( 3.97) not 3.35 times wich is v-8 first, except for the t-5z.......
so, i'm posting some pics just for the heck of it, you'd think these transmissions were gold or rare with the effort people take to lie and disguise them.......un real....
so, warning to all of you, check the gearing inside, because even if the snout measures right, it couldbe bogus. hopefully i'll get my money back, havent heard from the guy yet, i wonder if i will.lol.......god i coulda bought a lenco........lol.........

sure, when you can find one, that's the first thing missing from every car. I live in cali, home of the junkyard gold and I almost never find a t5 in a yard, they're desireable as hell.

wow - why don't u just save up n get a tremmec? or a world class T5? i didn't know if time was an issue or whatnot - but u should def use a new or rebuilt trans - i'm sorry u've been had man -

yeah its a pain in the butt........i paid 695 for it.....but keep in mind this was supposed to be a rebuilt world class.......which.....being my car isn't a strip car would more than suit my needs....
some good news though, i shipped it back, he offered to refund my money, said someone in his shop he hired who owns a mustang pulled a switcheroo.....so hopefully this will work out, like i said he did have good fed back.
as for my stupidity of attempting to buy a tranny on line etc......the pricing of these things is insane. i eed something i know is either rebuilt or in decent shape as i'm trying to avoid putting it in and having to yank it down the road. all thelocal places want alot to rebuild one, so by the time you find a cheaper one and have it rebuilt, your still getting up their in price when a new one is around 1100 bucks. so 7 hundred-ish seems fair for one thats been re built. even the junkyards want alot for them, if you can find one, then again like i said theres the possibility of having to have it rebuilt down the road...so i guess you either find a cheapie and hope it holds together or your spend bigger bucks for piece of mind. i'd rebuild one myself but i don't feel like trying it because i need to make sure when i put one in the car its going to work right the first time.......i should learn how to rebuild them and start doing it for a living......lol.......
anyway......i posted for venting reasons and also like i said, even if they have a tag, and the shaft looks the right size, look at tem real close and spin those shafts to make sure the ratio is what its suppoed to be because anymore thats about the only true way to tell with all the counter fitting going on..........
i suppose part of it is due to that wonderfull talent ford has had for decades.....changing designs and having multible different parts for any givin car.......lol.......gotta lov it!!

pull your tranny and have a reputable shop rebuild, or, buy the rebuild kit and do it your self. It could be fun, I'll help ya. Ford didnt build those it was borg-warner. Or break down and buy new. If you can come up with 700 whats another 300. Good luck man sry u were taken advantage of.

yeah i know ford didnt build them i just meant it woulda been nice had they used just one transmission.......i'm gathering parts for an aod t-5 swap.......have about everything but the t-5 itself, which i why i didnt pull or use one from my car.......which is why i been trying to find one out right.......otherwise i woulda just had the original one re done.....so thats been part of my madness....

Do what I did. Ask around for guys who have junk T-5's sitting around. I managed to get 2 of them for free. From that I was able to rebuild them into 1 good tranny with $150 in extra parts. The rebuilding was not that hard. I actually enjoyed it.

I actually now have 2 good fresh t-5's now for a total outlay of about $350. One is my primary and another is a spare.

Since winter is coming and i'm bored, i might ask around for some junk t-5's again and build another over the winter.

I just got shafted too. My 90 GT parts car, I was told I had a newly rebuilt D&D transmission, 3:73 gears, Flowmasters Mufflers, and a whole bunch of other shet that it didnt have. The tranny was a junkyard 4 banger trans......and looked worse than that one (by far).

T-5's are hard to find around here too. I want so badly to buy a new T-56 Viper 6-speed and be done it all the hassel for a long time.........but it prolly never happen. I'll prolly be domed to rebuilding my trashy T-5's for another 10 years or switching to a C-4 lol

theres alot of rip offs happening on ebay it use to be a good site u could go to and get used parts cheap and reliable but now its just turned into another store.

rebuilds are cheap. I bought the rebuild kit from hanlon motorsports, and after a while, decided I didn't feel like ****ing with it, and that rebuilding a trans was just something I didn't feel like doing (although simple from what i've been told)

find a local mom and pop old school type trans shop, they're everywhere. I found two local, my buddy went to one, me the other, and we're both happy. $350 out the door to rebuild mine, including parts and all labor. My input shaft was bent, second gear destroyed, and i had a bad slider, $100 more and I was set.

bro i know what it feels like to get beat on ****... some guy a few years back sold me this suppose to be ungodly tough built workd to the balls c4 with a pats converter for 1000... so i was like great i drive an hour to go get it ... the guys like 6.8 340lbs im like wtf so the trans looks good i pay the man take it home... installed it in the car that nite.. finished it the next day and went for a road test... pulled out of the garage put it in first went about 15 feet and the input shaft sheered off in the previously locked up junk converter he told me was so good... and same thing i called and called and called and i got shafted... to this day hes a part of these message boards and throws it in my face but will not meet me to settle up... or get cracked by a bat LOL.. so needless to say that was the last used thing that i bought from anyone ever again other then something i knew that couldnt be bad... i feel for you and if your willing i have a t5 trans here out of a 91 5.0... ran and drove fine when removed high 3 gear grind every now and again.. you can have it for free if your willing to drive for it ...

well thanks for all the replies.....like i said with so much activity going on with t-5's and people doing the swaps, and with all the tranny's i see being sold on line i just thought i'd pass along my experience as a reminder.
theres always been rip off artists and lets face it, people get ripped off way worse than i ever will from sellers or even auto shops, another reason i try to do as much to my car myself as possible. so i guess i can't complain too terribly, just amazed me how the t-5 thing is such a target for that stuff.....
i guess the real secret is taking all the precautions one can when purchasing something as too getting your money back if something does go wrong although thats hard to do.
the first guy that ripped me cancelled his e bay membership, then e bay said their wasn't much they could do to someone outside of e bay....which i suppose was there way of saying my situtation wasn't a big enough deal to persue.....
anyway, hopefully i can re coup from this recent dilema and.......lol, maybe buy a t-5 rebuild manual.......

Trying to decide which way to go, myself, to pick up another T-5 for my 'Stang - eBay auction, local yard, a new FRPP crate T-5, or just ordering a reman unit from someplace. I'd say you've pretty much talked me out of the eBay option, at this point.

One thing, though: What's stopping you from just swapping out the input shaft of the one you got with a V-8 input shaft? It's only four bolts for the bearing retainer, and the shaft pretty much just pops right off (just don't lose any of the roller bearings in there). Transfer bearings from one to the other (throw on a new SET5 or BR5 bearing on the good shaft, while you're at it), bead on a circle of red RTV, and bolt 'er up. A new hardened input shaft from Hanlon Motorsports only runs about $120 shipped - I'll be transferring mine onto whatever other tranny I get hold of later on.
