So a couple of days ago while i was leaving work, I was coming up to a stop and pushed in the clutch. Then pulled it out of 3rd and wouldent go into any other gear. It is stuck in neutral above 4th, it wont even slide over in neutral. So the mechanic shop at my work is going to crack it open tuesday and see if whats up. I guess im looking at a 200 dollar rebuild kit, or 1200 for a new tranny. I have a 89 and the alloys for 2nd and 3rd gear is a weaker metal than what was in 1990 and up. Why I say this is because 2nd and 3rd gear have been making a noise like a rat in heat. So mabye the gears themselves are chewed up. So what you guys think it could be, just as an insight for what is to come...

I don't really think a T-5 is worth hardly rebuilding. Mine went our about two months ago, it's sitting in the garage collecting dust, I bought a TKO 500.

Is the TKO a direct swap in or is there other things needed to be done?

Yes an no, the TKO 500 you need a different bellhousing, d/s yoke, and you have to do some mods to the crosmemeber, the 600 you will have to get a different clutch.

I would only put a rebuilt T5 in if you need a tranny ASAP and don't have the money to upgrade to the TKO. I've heard a lot of good things about Tremecs.

Before you jump the gun, wait til your mechanic tells you whats up. COuld have just broken a shift fork and it jammed the shift rail mechanism.

2nd and 3rd whining won't really have muchto do on the alloys of the gears (unless they are really chewed up) as it would the needle bearings the gears ride on.
