I am looking to convert to a manual in my 95 GT conv.. can I use a T45?

No, the T-45 has an integral bellhousing and it will not bolt up to a 5.0. If you want something better than a T-5, get a Tremec.

so like a 3550?
every where I have read says its a 5 speed with a 5th gear overdrive.. does that mean you have one more gear after 5th? or is 5th the overdrive?
its not a 6 speed, but its five speed PLUS overdrive right? so after 5th there is one more gear for better fuel economy?

Yes, it's a T-56. But it's not 100% identical to the T-56 for a Mustang, and using one is not a trivial swap.

Yep, it's a 5-speed. 5th is the overdrive gear. For a good, strong tranny I'd get a 3550 TKO or a new TKO 600. T-56 would be cool, but it's spendy and six gears are unnecessary on a V8 in my opinion.
