T5 Question

ok i have a 1988 5.0 recently i blew up third gear in the original tranny... picked up a used one for 200 bucks and threw it up... bad 2nd gear syncro... was sorta pissed but at least i was rollin again... well today i pulled the newer tranny out and tore each of them apart and i was going to make one good one out of the two... essentailly just take the good 2nd gear syncro out of the old tranny and put it in the newer tranny... was planin on switchin 2nd gear too but to my suprise the gears were different... both trannys are Borg Warner T5s... the marking on the top of the old one says it was made in 87... the marking on the newer one says it was made in 92... so i am assuming it was out of a 1993... the gear out of teh newer one looked as though it was a little beffer ( which was good) and also had more teeth but the bad thing about the gear was teh part that matches up to the syncro and the blocker... So out of all this rambling I guess what i am really asking was why are the gears different? I know that i was lookin at the same gear out of both trannies...

Ford beefed up the internals a little on the 90-93 t5 I believe. The gear ratios may have been different also.

i figured... too bad i can't use that gear though... well i will see if changing out the syncros do anything when i bolt up the tranny tommorow

Exactly. I know a lot of people will sell you a T-5 for a "v-8", but it is a 4 cylinder tranny. They look almost identical. The 4 cylinder tranny will have a numerically higher gearing. Almost like getting gears. Also, the one way you can tell it from the outside comparied to the V-8 T-5 is the inputshaft is different. Where the pilot bearing rides on a 4 cylidner T-5, It is longer and skinnier compared to a V-8 T-5. Hope this helps.

Borg&Warner continually upgraded the T5. The early WC were rated at 265 ft/lbs, the 88-89 went to 285 and the 90 and up went to 300. this was done by changing gear sizes and adding bearings. The aftermarket T5's(non Ford production units) were rated at 330 ft/lbs. Tremec now owns the T5 line and their web site has a lot of usefull info on it,plus a free assembly manual download. D&D performance also has good info on the T5 on their site.

You can make it work.

You blew up 3rd in your 85-89 spec tranny, so that mean you cannot use the cluster shaft or 3rd gear.

So you are better off using the 90-93 tranny as a base. The gears are different. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd are matched to the new cluster shaft so those must be used together.

But the synchros are the same. The 1-2 synchro is the big one with teeth on it (reverse) 2nd from the rear of the inner case. You can take the one out of your '87 tranny and swap it in and it will fit fine.

But, make sure you physically inspect the dog teeth the synchro latches onto. WHen those get rounded it can cause grinding. In that case you will need to locate a 90-93 2nd gear.

also, inspect all the blocking rings between the synchros and gears. These could be worn as well. They will interchange between trannys.

thanks for the replys... the gears in the newer tranny are beefier than the old one so i dought that it is a 4 cyl tranny. the gears were the same size just different amount of teeth... the dog teeth on 2nd gear is what i think teh problem might be.. but i could not interchange them... yeah the matching gear on teh countrer shaft was shot

Yeah, the gear ratios are different between 85-89 and 90-93. They will not interchange.

But it's an easy fix. Take the 1-2 synchro from your good tranny and switch them. Now you just need to track down a good used 31 tooth 2nd gear for a 90-93. New they are $82, i myself bought a good used one for about half that

i put it up and it runs good into second no grinding even with a hard shift, but for some reson 1st still grinds every once in a while but i dont really care bout that... i am just goign to keep looking for a good used tranny and always have a back up...lol but ever since i blew my tranny and got a ticket (pretty recent to each other).... i learned to valuble lessons u dont beat on it on the street stop light to stop light and it doesn't brake...lol and lesson number two you dont speed execessivly like most do you also wont get a ticket... lol
