1991 T5, takes ATF? also Ive heard that rather than doing the whole pump thing to add fluid, you can just stick a funnel into the inner rubber shifter boot. Anybody done this? If it can be done this way, how do know when you've added the correct amount?

Yes a t5 takes ATF. And if your going to pour it in from the top you got to take the shifter out. It take just shy of 3 qts.

you know you've added enough when you take 3 qts and put 2.9 of them in.. basically to take that .1 all you need to do is crack one open and pour some for the homies.

Open up the filler hole on the side of the trans and leave a drain pan under it. When you pour in from the shifter and it starts to come out from the fill hole, you're full. Pop the plug back in, and you're done.

ATF is great for the T5. Some put in gear oil but that is wrong. Ford hasn't recommended or required gear oil since manual transmissions came out with aluminum cases. Only their old school sticks with iron cases took gear oil. It also makes stiff shifts in the cold weather and you will hurt it.

If you do it this way you'll need a funnel with a tube to reach to the hole. It's a "dangerous" proposition pouring auto trans fluid into a funnel inside your car. The thought alone makes me quiver and shake. Don't do it.

Best bet is one of those cheap, throw away pumps and do it from beneath.

When it runs out of the hole, you are finished.

Use Mobil 1 Synthetic Auto Trans fluid for best results and longevity. 345,000 miles on my T-5 and no problems.

By the way, be sure to remove the filler plug before you remove the drain plug. Good luck!
