What makes it so hard to put into reverse. Also when driving on the highway in 5th for a while it has trouble going into 4th without a little muscle...

Reverse isn't synchonized, so it can be hard to get into. A common thing to do is put the transmission into 4th first, and then over into reverse.

If you're trans is getting hard to shift the first thing you want to do is drain and replace the fluid.

Might want to check the clutch cable. I had trouble getting it into 2nd. I was thinking it was the synchros going out. After a little while it was like that in all the gears. Turns out the cable was loose like it had stretched. Mine was a easy fix, i just pushed the clutch in then let it out and pulled it back with my toes. Worked fine after that. Cheap and easy to do so its worth a try.

I put mine in 1st then reverse.
Agree with seij also.
Tranny fluid change.

Here's how i do it.
Clear flexible plastic tubing, funnel small enough to fit in the tubing, and pull the shifter boot off and let gravity do the work through the fill hole on the side of the trans.

putting the car in any gear first and then reverse will make it much easier. I use 3rd, dont know why I just do.

Reverse is unsynchronized except for late 93's. That's when the t-5 finally got a synchroed reverse.

The teeth on the reverse engagement gear often round over with age. When they do, it makes it tough to get into Reverse. You might need to go into a forward gear first to stop and align the gears and try for R. If it doesn't go then, you need to let the clutch up in nuetral to spin the gears again and then stop them in a gear and try again.

Reverse parts are not replaced in a typical rebuild. The idler gear is about $40 and the 1-2/reverse slider is about $85.

As for 4th gear, if it's not a clutch/fluid issue, it sounds like the 4th gear blocker ring is wearing down. If you replace it now before it starts grinding, then you might get away with a $20 fix. If you start grinding 4th, the price could go up.

I think you had another post that said your t-5 was whining as well. Sounds to me like your trans needs some refreshing

pull the shifter toward reverse and slowly let the clutch out and it will pop right in

How much does it usually cost to rebuild a t5. I heard manuals were fairly easy to rebuild. If so I may try to take a stab at it.

Yourself?

Depends on what parts you need. I've done one at around $100 in parts and another $400 in parts. All depends on what is worn inside.

Memember on here is gonna give me a tranny. Said only 2/4/and R work so I figure it needs a pretty decent rebuild.

since 2nd and 4th are fubarred that means its not the shift forks. doesnt always mean they are good, they could go out if you rebuild it. best thing to do is take it apart and inspect it real good and get some guages to measure everything up and find some manuals to make sure the specs are within range

2,4,R not working is usually a shifter problem...not a trans problem. Every trans i have ever encountered that would not go in has had a loose shifter or something else wrong with it.

NONE of the parts for those 3 gears are related. 3 different shift forks.

You may not even have to rebuild. It could be a matter of a new shifter.

Of course, hard to say 100% sight unseen

Ok just double checked. 2nd, 5th, and reverse work. But 2nd is hard to get in.

I have evidence suggesting it could have been as early as late 92. I have a T5 in my car right now that I just rebuilt, and the tag says its a 92 but it has a synchronized reverse.
