So far so good with the T5 swap.

Now that I have the old FMX out I though I'd weight the 2 transmissions and take a few pictures for you guys.

My bathroom scale which I believe to be accurate withing a few pounds says the FMX weight 148lbs and the T5 weighs 78lbs.

Here's a picture of the old FMX and my T5 side by side:

Another pic of the 2 transmissions side by side.
For the weigh-in both bellhousings were empty and both transmissions are at their "wet" weight meaning they were full of fluid.

When I did my T5 swap, I sold my C4. When the C4 was weighed at UPS it was 110lbs. This included the box and packing which I eastimate to be 6-9 lbs, so the C4 is just a shade over 100 lbs. NO bellhousing or tq. converter included in weight.

FMX with torque converter? T5 with clutch, pressure plate, flywheel?

FMX's are heavy SOB's for sure. I think a C4 and T5 are reasonably close though.

Bellhousings were empty, but both transmissions were full of fluid.

FMX was damn heavy! T5 I can move around with realitive ease, the FMX takes alot of grunting to move only a few feet.

BottleFed70,

Thanks so much for the picture of the FMX you posted. It helped me to identify a transmission I pulled out today. Yes, it was VERY heavy  , but I managed to get the thing out without breaking anything (on myself I mean...hehe). I have been looking on the net for a picture comparison of older trannies, but was unsuccessful until I found this post. Now I would like to ask a question that I hope is not too far off topic. When I replace the fluid and filter on this FMX, what fluid would I use? Would I use Type F? I have never installed a transmission this old, and am unsure if there might be a better alternative out there for it. Would a synthetic of some type be better? Again, thanks for your post, it helped me alot! :nice:

Type F if you can still find it. Pep Boys by my house doesn't carry it anymore. It figures, now that it was recommended for my Lentech AOD.

Thanks for the help!

I have another question for you. I installed the transmission, and changed the filter and pan gasket. Now I want to put a transmission fluid cooler in between the tranny and radiator. Can you tell me which of the two ports on the transmission itself is the outlet and which is the inlet (return)? This would help me a great deal. Thank you for your time.

They say you can now use Dextron III in your Ford trannies, but I still look for Type F. The rip-off about it is that you can buy Dextron in four litre jugs, but it is almost impossible to find Type F around here in anything bigger than one litre (if you can find it at all), which you always pay way more for.

I have a bit of a problem with my tranny swap. I have no transmission fluid flow whatsoever. I changed the fluid (torque converter fluid too) and filter. I started the truck, watched the dipstick show a decrease in fluid level (presumably filling the torque converter as I had no leaks), and added more fluid to top it off. When the dipstick read as full I put the truck in gear (I had the rear end on jackstands) to cycle through the gears. I had no wheel motion at all. I let the truck run for a bit thinking it just needed to warm up (hoping of course). I still had no joy after a few minutes. I then decided to take off the rubber portion of my lines to see if my coolers had fluid. I think "maybe" ONE drop came out. I restarted the truck and cycled back through the gears with the line sections out, but had no luck. I haveno pressure. What could the problem be? I was assured the transmission worked well. The lines are not stopped up as far as I could tell as I blew a good stream of air through them. Is it possible that the pump is bad, or maybe the whole kit and kaboodle. I think altogether, I put in 8 quarts of fluid. I realize that I will probably need around twelve with a torque converter fluid change, but even with eight, shouldn't I see the pump pushing fluid out? I hope I can get some help on this one as my only choices now are to put that manual three on the tree back in (please no!), or put in a light duty SROD 4-speed that I have laying around (not a very good choice either considering I have to cut the floorboard).

Tomorrow I will be putting more fluid in it in the hope that this is a low fluid issue, although the dipstick is showing as full at 8 quarts (surely this isn't right, but it doesn't seem to want to take anymore). I will also take the lines back off to confirm again that there is no blockage and take off the vacuum modulator to test and also look at my vacuum line to it.

If all this fails, I guess maybe the tranny IS faulty after all. Anyone know how to troubleshoot a torque converter?

Any help will be appreciated...

p.s...I realize this is a Stang forum, but the engine in this truck came out of a 1983 Mustang GT and the tranny from a 1971 Mach 1...hehe...does this qualify me?

If you can help please do!

Thanx!
