Hey guys.. This may be a dumb question.. But are all t56's the same? The ones that came in ls1's and lt1's are the same as the 03 cobra trannys and the ones that people are putting in our cars? t56's out of ls1's and lt1's are a dime a dozen and im currently in search of a tranny. I know the ls1 and lt1 t56 has the upgraded input shaft (26 spline) stock versus the 03 cobra 10 spline input shaft. Other then that are there any differences?

Oh and can someone that has done the swap direct me to whatever other parts are needed to do it.. Maybe someone sells a kit?

Alright, i found the d&d website i was looking for. I gave them a call. The guy said the instalation kit was 8xx, and bell housing was 450. Even if i could get a tranny for 1k it doesnt seem worth it unless i can find a used bellhousing. So i think im going to scratch this idea

I know that all T-56's are not created equal. I am pretty sure the one that came in the 03 / 04 Cobras was rated to handle 450 ft lbs of torque.

I am not too sure about the T-56 tranny that came in the lt1's, and ls1's. I know that the T-56 in the Vipers have a 26 spline input shaft, and are rated for 650 ft lbs of torque.

I bought my T-56 (Viper spec) kit from D&D Performance.

They were very easy to deal with, and I highly recomend them.

About the only thing that I didn't get from them was the clutch, Flywheel, and pedal assembly.

well, since the search here doesn't work with either *T56 or T56*, I'm gonna use this thread to ask some questions, hope the OP doesn't mind..

I'm looking into doing this swap too and I want to know if the GM trannies will work in Mustangs. What has to be done to the cross member to do the swap? And more info would be awsome!

Ben i know you had some issues getting yours in. Would you do it again if you started over?

prolly not now that i am installing a turbo.

i prolly would have got a 600 with road race 5th and a 3.27 rear gear.

but i do have everything sorted out and it works great.

I looked into this a while a go and the speedo system from a cobra/chevy wont work. There are special t-56's made for just for our cars (they have a mechanical speedo system). Now I dunno if there is a conversion kit you can get to convert the electronic ones to manual..so theres something to look into. Also the sl1 t-56's had a skip shift doohicky where at low rpms the tranny would automatically take you from 1st to 4th. I dunno if that would cause any issues when installed in our cars. I wanted to go t-56 (full kit from D&D) but couldent afford it. It cost me about half as much to build my t-5 w/ a gforce gearset and get a new clutch disc. Now I am considering getting a road race 5th (.82) gear and swapping ring and pinion to like 3.27 or 3.08 kinda like bimmer tech wants to do. Currently my 5th is a .58 and its just too much of a drop from 1 to 1 which is fifth gear.

Hell yeah i'd do it over again and again. Its not even hard. Just like bolting up your regular tranny back in after a clutch swap. The only diffrence will be that you will need to make 8 holes for the new crossmember crackets. Plus a new shorter D/S that comes with the kit at d&d performance. ame clutch and all if you go with the non viper spec

The Tremec T-56 page shows that the T-56 is rated anywhere from 330 lb-ft to 550 lb-ft depending on the gearing and the exact model.

All of the Chevy T-56's that I know about (for the LT-1s and LS-1s) are the close ratio variety (this helped out for Chevy's "Skip-Shift").
