If I remember correctly, I used one of those plastic slicing clips. (I don't know a technical name for them) I pulled my gauge cluster out and spliced the lighting wire onto one of the lights in my instrument panel.
I ran the other wire to one of the acc. fuses in the fuse box

I think on my 72 I used the same splice clip refered to above and spliced it to the wire coming off my head light switch so that the light on the tach only came on when the headlights are on. I also mounted mine on the column.

Allright, 4 wires will hook up as followes

Red- switched 12v source
black- ground
white- headlight lead
green negative side of coil

Do ya have a volt meter? this makes it easier to figure out what fuse is coming on with the key, or you can plug and play lol But i have all my 12 volt wires going to the fuse box. As for the light there should be a wire coming from the switch.

The red wire???? thats what gives the tach the "power"

Basicly this the wire or source turns the tach on
