tail light problem

I'm having tail light issues and need some help. My brake lights and tail lights (with the light switch in either park or headlamp position) are inop. My flashers and turn signals work fine. Any ideas??

May need to replace the brake light switch on the pedal under the dash. I had to in my 65 some years back. They do go bad.

The common point is the Headlight switch, but you may have two separate issues. I would start checking for voltage using a test light at the light switch.

thanks for the ideas. I have already replaced the brake light switch so I think it is okay. the problem has gradually gotten worse so it probably if the headlight switch giving it up. I am going to check it anyway. As for voltages, is there a minimum reading that is acceptable other than 12 volts? Probably a dumb question but I had to ask.

If you have not charged the battery in a while and there is a drain on the battery, (such as your door open and the courtesy lamps are on). The voltage may drop below 11 volts or so, but could still be plenty to crank the starter.

For troubleshooting purposes, 10-12 volts would be good. That is why I mentioned a test light. If there is enough volts to light the lamp in the test light, find the next point down the line and check.
