Don't get any thin stuff. I've tried it and it generally sucks. I'd shoot for x-pel, lamin-x, etc. Something thick.

I am using some 5% vinyl window cling tint on mine, and it's working out nicely for me. It's a trick to install, but well worth it in my opinion. I've done at least 5 cars so far with the one big roll that I bought, so you could even buy a smaller one.

I'll have to get better pictures of them soon. My poor car is filthy, and I've been too broke to get to the pay-and-spray.

Here is them lighting up during the day. It's not hard to see them at all. This was supposed to be an exhaust video, but my friend started recording too late.

I suppose I should give a bit more substance to that post. I bought my tint from Murray's/O'reilly's, and it was something like $6. It is the Gila vinyl 5% cling tint. I will snap a picture of it and get a part number the next time I am at the garage. I used the No More Tears and water in a spray bottle with a rubber 3m Squeegee applicator method, along with a blow dryer. I have a friend that wants his done, so I could possibly attempt a write-up, I suppose.

And it's cheap and looks horrible. The proper way is either thick film or reduced black paint then cleared, like my old car:

If done properly, VHT Nightshades comes out awesome. I've done 3 sets of tails for friends, and they have all come out awesome. It's all about how well you prep the lens, and making sure you are consistent with your coats. Then follow it up with 4-5 coats of Duplicolor Acrylic Lacquer clear coat. Wetsand with 800 or 1000 grit, then 1500 grit followed by rubbing compound. I wish I had some good pics of my friends Audi tails, the only ones I have are terrible, and the car is filthy.
