Nothing will fall out. The only parts inside the tailshaft housing are the 5th gear parts and they will not fall out.
Is the tranny still in the car? Or did you take it out. It can be done in the car. Also, i don't think you need a gasket. I think the tranny is put together with RTV on everything. I used it for mine.
Anyway, to take the tailshaft housing off, you need to take the shifter off. Shift to neutral first. There is a pin holding the shifter block to the shift fork shaft. Drive it out with a punch. When you take the pin out the shifter block will come off the rod. You may be able to get it off now.
Unbolt the tailshaft housing and break the seal and pull it backwards. Now you will be able to take the shifter block off. Pay attention to the spring and ball under it. Don't lose them.
Now clean the surface off the tranny case. If you want, now is a good time to change the speedo drive gear. Install either a black 6 tooth or yellow 7tooth gear. That will solve the problem of tearing up the white 23-tooth speedo gears.
Putting it all back together if just the reverse. Slide the tailshaft housing off while lining up the shifter block into the shift rod. Make sure you put the spring and ball back in. Bolt the tailhousing back on and drive the pin back in.
It can be done in the car, but you will need a 2nd person to work inside the car to do the procedure with the shifter block.
If you take the tranny out, it's a cakewalk.
