Drivetrain T5 Transmission Leak at Tailshaft

Noticed some transmission fluid coming out of the T5 at the tailshaft. Just got car back together. T5 is used and put aluminum driveshaft in. Seal at tailshaft doesn’t look to be in bad shape but it’s leaking out from behind that seal, into driveshaft then down onto exhaust.

Just curious who’s been down this road before. Does replacement of that seal only tend to typically fix this and how hard of a job is that with transmission still installed?

Or have a lot of people seen this one still leak after the seal and there be more too it.

Just trying to prep myself for how to fix.

Thanks,

It's similar to a rear main seal or a timing cover crank seal, yank the driveshaft, pop the rear trans seal out, tap the new one in. I coat the yoke with trans fluid, some on the splines of the tailshaft too.
I will worn you, my mechanical skills rate as well as my spelling and grammar :hide:

Take driveshaft off rear end and check the amount of play at trans. If the yoke has alot of play then just changing the rear seal in tail housing ain't gonna do.
You'll have to change the tail shaft bushing ( no fun).

Tool to change the bushing is really nice to have but they are expensive. You may put a feeler out on here and see if anyone has one and will loan / rent it out.

This one came up in several threads on other forums with really good reviews:

Other option is to pull the housing and take it to a transmission shop and have them replace the bushing. I would call them before doing any work so you know if they just want the whole transmission or just the housing.
